I have the, "unpopular" flat blue dial above...
Indeed, can see why a blue SS Sub would be a huge hit. The flat blue is not unpopular, just not as popular as the sunburst which has gone viral, every firm is pedalling one these days.

I like my blue stick dial DJ41 because depending on the lighting it can look anywhere from black to shining bright blue. Blue is classic enough to not look out of place (bright orange would stand out too much, blue is fine) and yet still stands out a bit.

I love white and silver dialed watches in the pics I see on the internet, just not on me. Having said that, blue is a nice change from black dialed watches. Darker but still colorful and interesting.

Why a Blue Dial

I really like the colors green and blue. I always associate these colors with soothing, childhood memories, verdant forests, and glass oceans.

So when I discovered that Rolex made a watch that interest me years ago with these 2 colors combined in a way that compliment each other. It piqued my interest. The sunburst blue dial in this reference is iridescent and can change from grey to black with change in lighting and viewing angles.

It put a smile on my face when I tried it on. So now I have it in my collection.

That’s very cool. Thanks for sharing that.

I think it’s more than a few years that blue dials have been popular. I think it’s been decades.

My next watch will likely be a blue dial.

I wear a blue dial Roman DJ as my one and only watch- I feel like it’s subtle enough that it goes with anything- I wear scrubs to work so I‘m never dressed up. I just fell in love with the blue dial. When I ask my wife what she thinks about me wearing it daily she said” you can never be overdressed- just under- and that includes watches”

Sucker for blue dials since I saw my very first rolex at the age of 11. I said that day, I will eventually own one as my goals in my life. Retail price back then for a DJ was $1k. I've heard comments for some that blue dials are just a fad, but not for me.

Blue is versatile, classy and dressy without being in-your-face vs. Black - which I find more harsh/mature depending on the design. Although the blue dial is best when you have a lot of dial surface area and not overcrowded with design.

Maybe because we subconsciously associate blue with the sky and oceans.

Great input everyone. I’ll post pictures of the 41mm DJ Roman blue dial when I picture it up tomorrow. Here is the picture from the AD.

Pretty much this. I think blue definitely invokes emotions and people are drawn to it. Plus blue tends to match well with other colours (especially dark blue which can look black in some light) so it’s easy to pair with an outfit.

I think most watches were either black or white dials when blue started being made. It was the “cool” choice. It seems like what watchmakers can do with shades, flat or vibrant colors, created many more options than just a slightly lighter or darker white or black. My first and only for about 10 years was a blue Seamaster, never thought that blue wasn’t a good one and only color. Now I’ve got one white dial watch and two black dial, and still have the Seamaster, my next is probably blue, maybe rhodium, if the blue continues to be very hard to get.

Why Blue? Different Reasons.

Fashion: I think Blue is most peoples favourite color. That aside, Blue dials are Versatile. Can be worn casually and formally.

Psychology: Conformity. Follow the crowd Mentality. Studies have shown this over decades. Humans love to feel among a group and many hate/fear being outcast. So if blue is what majority prefer, subconsciously blue becomes most peoples choice. If i wake up tomorrow and strongly start pushing Silver dial to the point where i gain a following, Same thing will happen.

Economics: Demand and Supply. This one is self explanatory to anyone on this board.Blue is hyped, demand is high, Supply is squeezed..Becomes a luxury amongst luxury : )

Personal: The Blue dial on the Submariner is what got me into Rolex. It makes me smile every-time i look at it. If i had to give up one between my Bluesy and my first born, best believe the kid will be sacrificed (I have no kids but you get the point) :)

The blue and black are the most popular, i would always go for a blue dial any day anytime, there is just something about a watch with a blue dial that i can't shake off.
