I would keep the RO for the weekends and add a speedmaster (if you want a chrono) or exp1 (if you want a rolex) for my daily. Also keep in mind inflated pricing on the Daytona. The daytona is a 12k watch and looks/feels like a 12k watch. The RO is a 20k watch and looks/feels like a 20k watch.

I do agree the AP looks and feels like a 20k watch. Same with the Daytona at its 12k MSRP. That was what drove me to buy the AP in the first place since I felt that I could get more watch for almost the same amount of money. Then again, I still think the Daytona C is the best looking chrono in the market...

I would go even further on the RO saying it punches above its weight (ofcource only if you get it at Retail). Bracelet, dial, case finishing, movement, history/being an iconic piece fo 20K and also retains its value is kind of a bargain realy. I Always say its one of those rare watches where you can actualy see where youre money went.

Again, i would keep the RO and just pickup a 3/4k speedmaster for my daily. Cant go wrong with a Speedy.

And, as nice as the stainless Daytona is, I would only buy one at retail. It's worth it at that price. It's not worth $25k.

So did your RO retain value as noted by Frits1980?

Given that the Daytona has a lower level of finishing compared to the AP, it seems like a bad idea to offer up the Ap and cough up more cash for the trade.

For me, I added just a little. It was at the beginning of this year so the numbers weren't actually as high as they currently are on the Daytona.

However, it depends on your situation. My AP was an I-Series from 2015 so warranty just ended and the 5-year service interval is coming up... although I could stretch it a couple more years. The Daytona I swapped for is brand new (literally), it was through a reputable individual/"grey" I've known for a while and he secured the piece as a part of a deal he did himself via an AD so everything was in my name with stickers, etc.

^not like that matters to many, but it was a bit extra that was worth it.

Also, I bought my AP pre-owned a while back so my cost basis was a lot lower... everything balancing out my Daytona stands way less than what current market trades for so I'm happy both watch and dollar wise.

____

Watch for watch, I would do the trade. Perhaps open to adding a bit extra but that is highly dependant on the condition of your watch as well as the Daytona you are getting back.

I found I wore the AP less and less. And I personally only like keeping a 3-4 watch collection. One in, one out mentality until I've found my perfect collection.

It comes down to your own preference. You just have to ask yourself: Are you in it for the watch itself? or for the "value" the watch brings?

Pricing seems to be your main hurdle, but the watch you've decided is the Daytona.

If that's the case, the market is the market. You've got to pay to play especially if buying it at MSRP is impossible. People saying the Daytona is not at $25k watch but a $12k watch surely won't go sell it for $12k either. So yes, it is a $25k if they can get $25k or whatever the market will bear.

I own a Daytona C but if I didn’t own one, I would never trade your AP away to get one.
Keep the AP all day long.

I could only get the Daytona C by trading away my AP.

Could anyone share their thoughts if this trade makes sense?
I traded a 15400 for a Daytona 116520. Never looked back. Full disclosure I had 2 Royal Oak so I’m down to one in 39mm. Love the bracelet, tapisserie dial...

In short, your trade make sense but both pieces could easily coexist in a collection...You might miss your RO.

I have both and much much prefer the AP 15400. Although the Daytona looks good, I really find myself looking for things to time as that is what the Daytona is supposed to do. And when I find something, I realize if you really want to time something a Speedy is a much better watch. The Daytona looks neat however so I suppose that is why we have them. It is just that the 15400 looks that much better. However I find that I can wear the 15400 well and it doesn't look too big, but it has such great wrist presence.

You made the right move keeping the AP. Daytona is a small and vastly overrated watch to me.

If every you want to get a Daytona, get the white dial it's perfect.

well honestly a Daytona is a piece that can make almost any one lustful.

It's completely up to you whatever you want to do.
