I bought a vintage yG day date... change it to a black strap for black tie events.

Here is what I ended up buying. I do have couple of other less expensive watches, such as from Montblanc and even Stowa. I am so used to wearing watches, it will drive me crazy if were to not wear one - tux or no tux.

A good choice could be to skip a watch.

Regarding “rude” - well that’s a bit strong - just wearing it wouldn’t be rude. It should be out of sight under the cuffs.

However, checking it in plain view, or especially in mixed company, during the event would appear boorish.

If one were out of sight, like outside or in the “facility” then checking the time would be fine.

100% agree we all need a dress watch...certainly looks weird dressing up and wearing a sport model.

Great looking GO! I'm seriously looking at a Panoreserve myself.

Check out other brands, JLC, Breguet, Patek for your “dress” watch. Or you could get a vintage DJ get a nice leather band.

Also who cares about that Instagram post of what watch to wear when. No one would throw you out a party if your weren’t wearing the correct watch. I’d personally just stick with your Daytona.

As I am An Old, this is what I was taught, too.

But ... it never made any sense to me. I acknowledge the “You are already there“ aspect, but there are other factors. Some people have babysitters with curfews. Others may want to take the morphine/molly/whatever at a certain time, to have it kick in just right.

Absolutely, in such case the least one can do is indeed use a dress watch on black leather instead of a G-shock or Submariner and use it discretely as 77T pointed out.

Attending a black tie event without regard for it's "rules" does not show a lot of respect to the host.

Some will never try to understand and perhaps are just eager to show that they own a Rolex. Hey look at me everybody, I made it

Exactly the contrary from what black tie stands for, but ignorance is bliss

You are wrong imho. I can assure you I have never once said “I need a a Cellini”

I did admire an older round platinum model with the pale blue dial and seriously considered it but that is not the question.

I have owned multiple Calatrava models at once but when I laid eyes on my 5124g I sold them all. It is not a dress watch but a casual all around non sport watch. For my taste, at its price point there is not another watch that can touch it.

If you wish to diversify, rather than focus on Cellini, it is a great opportunity to cultivate your own sense of taste for non sport models. Maybe you will come back to the Cellini after all but with a more complete and confident understanding of your choice.

On another note, I once thought "I needed a Cellini," but I was hungry and I thought it was some kind of Italian pastry...

This just a perfect response. Following a trend or suggestion might get you in a situation where you're just not confident enough with your dressing. So just go with what you feel comfortable with.

Wear a watch when you need to know what time it is... black tie or not. New Years seems like a reasonable time to wear a watch. get a Patek.

A quick luncheon poll here revealed an unexpected US dichotomy - All three Southerners (NC/MS) had been taught the “no watch with a tux” bit at some point in their youth, while the three Yankees (NY/CT) had never even heard of such a rule.

I think there are far better dress watches out there for that money than a Cellini IMO

I think a nice Lange would fit the bill. You'd probably wear it more than you suspect.

The time only Cellini is very nice but I’d be hard pressed to choose it over say an ALS Saxonia thin. The PP 5196 is also a great choice. I’m a fan of Nomos too if you’re OK w stainless. Too many options that outshine the Cellini IMO.

I wear my IWC with a suit, 7 day Portugueser. Rolexes for weekend/travel. I will also, for a evening formal event etc, wear a Royal Oak.

for a proper dress watch a calatrava would be the ideal choice

but there are alternatives like jlc

but if james bond could wear a submariner in his tuxedo, why not

Don’t have to be a Cellini, can be a invicta.
