Ignore formality if you like, but at least recognize that's what you're doing. A dive watch is not formal attire.

This comes up frequently and the gang always tells the questioner "do whatever you like." Fair enough, but that's not actually a true statement when it comes to formal attire. You can't do "whatever you like," and respect formality at the same time.

For example, I might think red Chuck Taylors look awesome with black tie, but it would be irresponsible to present that opinion as a summary of the traditions and customs of formal attire. There's a difference.

To the OP: you're asking an on-line wristwatch fan club a question they're incapable of answering objectively. Beware!

Have you seen what passes for formal raiment these days, saw a guy with a PP wearing a dark blue linen suit, it looked like a well used dog-bed

The answer lies with Sean Connery.
He wore it for killing, eating, hunting, space launches, Hunt Balls, cocktail parties and some other extra curriclular activities........
Stop worrying about what other people think and just wear it !

I absolutely loath all of these "you cant wear this with that" "This don't go with that" "Don't wear that if you're going to do this", etc. rules. So I find that the best way to protest against that nonsense is wear my sub with formal attire, seriously. After all, you know what they say about rules? They were meant to be...

I couln't agree more! Its a Rolex in SS and black - why is that not formal enough? Wear it and be proud! Hell, I'm going to wear by DSSD with a suit next week just because I can!

Go with what you feel comfortable wearing. SS Sub looks good on most occasions.

I recommend against basing fashion decisions on Sean Connery film stills.

Dive watches aren't "formal." That a guy wore one in a movie we all loved as kids doesn't change that.

It's a Rolex. It looks good even when you don't. So wear it with formal attire, jeans, sports wear or your birthday suit, either way it'll look great

And don't listen to people who try to tell you that you can't wear a SS Sub with formal wear, it's totally your choice. It's like asking people whether or not you should pull up your socks when wearing shorts. No one cares, do whatever you want, but most importantly enjoy your watch

Rolex even says so in their ads.

Not really on point but...

I had to wear my tux last night and would normally wear my TT Datejust but I have sent the band over to Michael Young to see if he can get some of the strech out of it so I the DJ was out unless I taped it to my wrist. I tried my SS Sub Date, but try as I might, I couldn't pull the trigger and my SS Breitling Superocean Chrono is even bigger so it was out. So I went with a very old rosegold Gruen on a black band that was handed down from my grandfather.

While the Gruen is a very, very small watch, the SS Sub just did not go with my gold cufflings and I had a hard time getting it under my cuffs. My grandfather had passed away long ago and I have had the Gruen for about 20-25 years, but I could not help but think about him all night while wearing it. I may need to give it more wrist time.

As per a link I had posted earlier, the jewelry you wear with your tux should match your cufflinks and studs. That said a SS watch would not go well with the gold cufflinks. I tend to only go with silver, so the SS Sub works well with it.

Well, it depends on whether you are following the traditions of formal wear (which is NOT the point of the OP's question), in which case you would never, ever wear a sport watch with a tuxedo.

However, if you are (llike most people today) less concerned with the strict formalities of proper formal dress, then it seems to me you can wear any watch you please and it'll be okay. You just won't be properly attired in the traditional sense, but that's okay with more and more people these days.

Once you give up the real rules, though, pretending that just some of them matter simply doesn't make any sense to me.

Someone always says this every time we have this discussion. Unless you're going to have to go out and get in your submarine with custom rockets or dive back to your beach and avoid the guy with the sawblade yo-yo like James Bond, I would find something more appropiate to go with a suit or tux. Just because it's expensive doesn't mean it's appropriate. If I buy a $1000 pair of tennis shoes should I wear them with a tux? One of the main reasons I pulled the trigger on my DD is because I came the realization that my blue sub just didn't look good with a suit no matter how much I wanted to believe it did.
