If you like vintage then you really have no choice anyway.

On a day I buy a new Rolex for myself (or any other brand, for that matter), you will see a bunch of these:
Many people have more brains than money - they own 60+ watches. How much wrist time do you think those get? So, I have come across many Rolexes that ARE practically new, Z or newer, that have been worn twice at the most, and I buy them at 50% or more off list. And even then - it is still new to me!

^^ Same here. I have only purchased the DSSD new from an AD because I bought it last year when they first came out. All the rest have been pre-loved. I could care less about my name being on the warranty card because I plan to never sell any of them.

It really depends on the model. I have been able to buy my watches from an AD ay prices that are compariable or even better than gray market. Of course if I was buying vintage, then it's a different story.
I woudl say I'm willing ot pay maybe up to 5% more from an AD than the gray market. Once the spread gets more than that, the decision becomes harder. |

Peace of mind? There is something to be said in having the peace of mind that you didn't have to spend more than you had to for a fine timepiece. And the piece of mind not having to pay taxes.

That is the same feeling I get every time I make my way back down to Miami and call my very favorite lady... For that 10 seconds or less (oops, sorry that was from a movie I just watched) I feel special. Again, that is until I pay and walk out the door!
There are so many BNIB clear carded Rolex's in Southern California on the second hand market, there there is almost no reason to buy from an AD. BUT, if that is what is desired, the AD's are willing to work with you. |

I've purchased my Daytona, my wife's DJ, my PAM 104, as well as thousands of dollars worth of John Hardy jewelry all from the same AD. When Panerai announced the new Pam 28 Special Edition at Geneva this year, I called my AD. I'm now #1 on his list and will be getting the first watch that he gets in.......That's why I buy from an AD

The GMTII C I have now, will be the one and only new watch I'll ever buy.
All others will be used or BNIB from our wonderful members we have here. Only wish I found this forum years ago. |

Of the 10 Rolex's I have bought thru the years 4 came BNIB from an AD.
I think the only way I would use an AD in these times, is: 1) Big discout 2) lay-a-way 3) time paymensts with no interest. |

I think one of the reason is that you might want to have your name on the warranty card as the first owner of a Rolex at least once in a lifetime :)

The major qualm I have about buying used is that many people resize the bracelet and I need the band to be the same as it was when purchased at the dealer. I used to be a little uncomfortable about used, but increasingly, I feel used is the way to go. I just have to make sure to ask about the band size and how many links were removed, etc.

I've always bought new from the same AD because I get great service, extras thrown in (diaries, watch pouches, polishing cloths, books, magazines etc) and peace of mind. My AD recently swapped a brand new watch for another one at my request - despite the guarantee card already having been filled out with my details. I'm not sure how many grey dealers could do the same.
Still, with grey dealers offering very attractive prices for new, BNIB and secondhand watches, I think it's very much a matter of personal choice whether we buy from an AD or not. |

the problem I have with the grey market is you never know if the watch is real unless the guy you really know the guy you are buying from and even then some copies are so good that they might get fooled.
I pruchased a new sub from a reliable grey guy, but never fealt kosher so I had it opened and check by Mayors then sold it and went to an AD . this is just my pshychosis though |

Sentimental reasons here.
I have a Rolex watch with my gradfather's name on the papers. My father has a Rolex watch with his name on the papers. I have a Rolex watch with my name on the papers. It meant a little something to me and I was prepared to pay the extra, as I would for my son when the time comes. J |

So would you rationalize buying a used car over a new car the same way?
Sounds like the majority in this thread do.... |
