I think you are right! but to me the vintage line should be tritium dial or not. But it is all VERY subjective.

My guess is they will be in high demand in a decade or two, due to the combo of vintage patina + robustness of materials (like saphire) making them not as fragile as older vintage.

Not vintage, but I don't think that matters. I think watches from the 80s and 90s (whilst not vintage) will continue seeing a resurgence in popularity as the people that grew up in that era (me) look back with some nostalgia.

The same is happening with 80s and 90s cars that kids drooled over.

The 16610 and watches in that timeframe sit within a funny position on this forum though. The general forum is just stuffed full with grey dealer and 6 digit talk, and these 5 digits obviously aren't discussed much in the vintage section.

Many today feel twenty five years old qualifies a given reference as vintage while some collectors feel a true vintage piece must have a plexi plastic crystal.Although the 16610 was introduced in 1988 IMHO its got a long way to becoming or called vintage.

25 year old cars are entitled to historic license tags in some places...

I wouldn't call my 16710 vintage by any means.

Modern classic? Yeah, I could live with that!

Yeah there is some sort of cut off where they class a watch as vintage or classic. Can’t remember the wording they use and there is different service pricing. I think it’s to do with when the model was discontinued but I can’t remember.

"A Rolex classic" could be another very similar definition. Subs have had for decades the overall apeareance of the 16610.

I tend to class "vintage" as anything over 30 years, similarly to the way cars are classed. So while the 16610 as a model is not "vintage" in my book, any 16610s produced between 1987 and 1990 I would class as vintage.

It will be interesting to see how the glossy, applied white gold, non-tritium lume dials age over time. One thing is for sure... they aren’t making any more 5-digit subs!! I for one love my 16710... sure feels like a classic to me... very different feel and case shape vs. modern ceramic bezels and maxi superluminova dials. I’m thinking now is the time to pick up a 5 digit sub... will be vintage, or neo-vintage, or classic, or whatever soon enough. Certainly out of print!

I say no. But I also saw a guy on Instagram the other day refer to his Hulk as vintage. The “hypebeasts” ruin everything.

The higher the price goes on a 16610, the more vintage it will get.

To the inexperienced maybe. The first ceramics are now the old one. Aluminium = Vintage. Ooo you have a vintage Sub. So cool. Instagram ready.

I’d say neo-vintage.
