Later he had a coke, but in the early sixties he wore a ref. 6542 (Blue-Red bakelite bezel, no crown guards).

Just looked up the 6542. What a reference.

I actually just got my BLRO this past weekend. It gives me chills to look at. I'm glad I can celebrate Chuck with it.

Sorry to hear about him, RIP! One of the greats. I wanted a Rolex in the 70's because I admired him so much.

It’s hard to imagine Mr. Yeager worrying about a scratch on his clasp, or complaining about the paint coverage on the edges of the GMT hand, or being irritated that the bezel doesn’t index perfectly to the dial markers.

In other words...he’s my kind of guy.

Just think of all of the clowns we/our kids have idolized. This guy was the real deal. He came from an era when you actually had to achieve something significant to be a hero. Very sad. Even now, someone has most likely created a successful COVID vaccine.... but you’ll never know their name... only the company that owns it. They’ll get a 5k Xmas bonus for curing a horrible disease while the CEO gets 50MM and the star of their local NBA team rakes in 20MM...

Long gone are the days of Salk, Yeager, Roosevelt, etc

Actually as a test pilot I’m sure he “sweated the details”. But I understand your point- he had a lot of big things on his plate. However- my dad, who ran the shop on a sub tender in the navy...and growing up EVERYTHING was a big deal, down to the smallest thing.

When I heard he died my watch research kicked in. He wore a Rolex Sub and Rolex GMT and I waited for a thread like this.

RIP Chuck Yeager, and thank you for your service to your country and duty to humanity.

This isn't a $25,000 Rolex GMT Master 1675 which is one of my grail watches, but it is still fun to wear nonetheless.

The pointed crown guards with the flush screw down crown is the best part of the 38mm vintage GMT. It doesn't catch on clothing like a dive watch crown.

I'm always learning something new about watches. When Rolex and Pan Am created the GMT. It turns out pilots didn't get jetlagged if they visually and mentally saw the time local and away in their mind. This would explain the Pespi blue and red dial representing night and day. I can totally see Chuck Yeager understanding that concept and using it.

Hard to imagine NASA didn't think he had "The Right Stuff" to be a Mercury Astronaut......as Tom Wolfe described him, in his wonderful book, "The Most Righteous of all the possessors of The Right Stuff"

Nice! Same functionality for ~$400.
