They open the whole watch before sizing it?

This is kind of absurd. Plenty of AD’s sell pre owned rolexes with no box or papers. Seems like a pretty generalized statement that may reflect your personal preference but should not be imputed to people seeking help like OP.

Careful, this seems to be a very touchy subject

All unboxed/no card watches are fakes or stolen. Period.

You've done this or you've heard it or you just imagine it will work?

Done it many times. I live in LA, we have a RSC in BH. Not everyone is that lucky with their location of course.

He is definitely "on top"

The majority of watches for sale out in the wild, or having been "pawned" do not come with boxes or papers. Very few Dealers will have those items with the watches traded in either.

Ben Bridge, for example, tours their trade-ins yearly, throughout the country, and none of the watches come with either original box or papers.

Fake watches are a thing, but fake box or papers? No way!

When it comes to pre-owned watches, I'd have it authenticated whether it has box/papers or not.

If such things scare you, then just line up at the AD and wait your turn.

I know a website specializing in fake papers; just provide them with a serial number and you'll have all the fakeness you could ever want. No issue finding boxes either.

Thank you so much guys for your help. I decided not to do it, and just pay extra to make sure it comes with B&P.
