I'm in a similar position

My thinking is 2 fold
My watches will live in my closet day to day, in a draw that looks like all the other draws but have a hidden key lock fitted
You could likely pry it open in a couple of min with a crowbar if you wanted too but unless an burglar plans to riffle through my underwear, i doubt itll get seen too in a break and enter situation as (in my experience) people who kick your door in during the day dont spend too much time searching for stuff and just grab whats in plain site.

I'll also install a medium sized safe that's hidden away in my walk in pantry that watches and valuables will be stored in when i'm going to be away from the house for an extended period of time.
That way they have a higher level of protection should someone break in and know they have a bit of time to look around

I live in a built up area and am good terms with my neighbors, some who work from home during the day, so i would hope they call the police if they hear jackhammers going at 2am

Investing in a good fire rated safe is a smart move in case of fire or as a deterrent/protection from theft. Not just for watches/jewlery etc, but also for important documents and irreplaceables. Usually with most safes the higher the fire rating the higher the price but the materials used also make a huge difference. Tons of options out there and you can spend a ton if you're so inclined, but you shouldn't skimp on the safe that you're keeping important things in.

Don't buy a cheap Sentry or similar, pointless.

Wonder if someone breaks in and sees a 400 lb safe and with a camera pointing at it and thinks “jackpot”. Goes over to you or waits until you get home and threaten you or your family members to open it. I actually think that a Safe it’s a hazard!

I much prefer a Safe deposit box or hiding valuables in a place nobody will ever search for- get creative my friends! Make it a weekend project and create a safe spot (false cabinet door, false floor tile, false air vent, etc etc. or
Get a 3K safe and which screams “Jackpot” and hope and pray that burglar doesn’t stick around for you to come and open it!

It’s funny how people think that all these burglars will look at a safe and say “it’s too hard to open, let me just move on” hahaha. Like all these low lifes are scared of a little confrontation like there isn’t people who rob banks mid day with cameras pointing at them and a security guards.

My brother used to have a huge Burmese python, and when he went out of town he’d put his small valuables in the snake habitat. You could always go that route.

If you're going to get a safe, you really have to spend to get one of a proper size and quality. I think hiding, insurance and or a bank safe deposit box are better options.

my insurers insisted on a safe for my watches - no problem

but they did say do not buy a secondhand safe as there is no guarantee that it meets current regulations so in effect is not covered by insurance

in the UK a safe with up to say £100K cover for watches/jewellery (cash limit is far lower) is not that expensive

but they insist it is bolted to concrete not brick walls

mine has two bolts into the floor - they allowed me to 'self certify' as i was an architect, but if in doubt get professional installation

in the UK if you have a safe with say £10K cash rating it is covered up to 10x that for watches/jewellery ie £100K

once installed per safe manufacturers conditions you get a certificate for your insurers

btw - gun/firearms safes are not acceptable in the UK

my safe is by Securikey and i can fully recommended them

Thoughts?
We bought a nice Liberty gun safe. It looks like a piece of furniture and that is where all the watches and other things go while not in use. One out at a time is all.

gun safes may be acceptable in the USA but are most certainly not in the UK and most of Europe
