TT SD43 is a beauty. It may not be for everyone. I would say find a way to try one on, if you can. I have been considering a Sea Dweller. Stainless would look nice on a rubber strap, and might not show scratches, but the TT just makes me smile. It is a bold watch for sure.

Had a brief conversation, the usual: Hard to get, lengthy waitlist, happy to put my name down, etc. I was polite and appreciative of his time, hung up and thought, “The search continues…”

He called me back four minutes later (I checked my call log), and asked if I’d be interested in a TT 43 as he could get me one within a few days. I was flummoxed. This is the first time I’ve gotten close to acquiring any Rolex.

The problem: I’ve tried on a TT Sub and didn’t love it. I’m not really a gold guy and the TT may be more overstated than I like. But, it feels like I’m in rarefied air with the chance to own a beautiful watch.

Is a bracelet swap an option? I believe I would enjoy the dial and bezel if it only had an SS Oyster.

What would you fine folks do?

Pics for reference. First is me trying on an SS, second is a stock TT photo.
Why anyone would even think of buying any watch they did not really want just because they got a call from a AD offering a watch for sale defeats me. And even harder to think if bought to change bracelet from original TT to plain SS.

If I was offered one at MSRP I would be strongly inclined to buy it, subject to trying it on. That's because I like it more than the SS, which doesn't interest me. But if it doesn't sing to you, save your money. Don't settle.

I was in a similar position in December 2019. I really wanted a SS black Sky Dweller. No AD could help me including my local AD, who tend to be realistic in their projections. I asked them to get me a TT black because I liked it and I figured that it was essentially the same but had more material value. Later that year, when Rolex announced their second UK price rise in 12 months, I made what appeared to be a snap decision, but it wasn't. My hind brain had merely managed to get through at long last. I wanted the SS. I was settling for the TT. I abandoned the TT black order and went grey for the SS black before another MSRP price rise boosted the grey market. Moral, at least for me is, get what you want, not what you think you could settle for. But do have a look at the TT because you never know.

Not a fan of the TT SD43. I would pass and go to our Trusted Sellers and find a good example that is complete. I would negotiate my best price, pay, and have the watch on my wrist by tomorrow at lunch.

Don’t buy something you don’t like. Getting a TT for for your first purchase is a tough one for most of us. They are definitely beautiful and add some colour though. Stick with that AD and visit personally. You should get the SS version in a reasonable time.

Because, at this point in time, Rolex and their ADs have combined masterful artificial scarcity marketing and a customer vetting and selection process to convince prospective customers that they are LUCKY to even be offered an opportunity to purchase ANY Rolex at all.

If you turn it down, have you blown your chance? Will the SA never call me again for another watch? Will this destroy my "relationship?"

I had no idea this would be the last Rolex offered to me by an AD as I had not been offered any watches for a few years at this point. This was on March 12, 2020. I also had no idea we would be locked down against Covid just 2 days after this. I do regret not getting it!

I prefer SS to gold, but think having a gold or TT piece in the collection adds versatility.

Seeing the picture in your original post - the TT would look amazing, IMHO - in place of the SS. My vote is to buy it, and continue to build the relationship with the AD assuming you want more pieces in the future.

That TT is gorgeous, not by any means over the top, and I would jump at it if my wrists were bigger!

No, wait for the SS SD. They aren't as hard to obtain as many other SS sport models. Shouldn't take too long. Wait and get what you want.

i personally love the watch. ultimately it will be on your wrist. if you have to ask for reassurance, chances are you know the answer within yourself. if you dont love it, dont buy it. there have been certain instances ive seen (in my very short time as a member here) where people spend an X amount of money and time to build a relationship with their AD just to lose the real watch they were eyeing from the get go.... i always see people talking about money but the real loss here is the time wasted. Time is precious. money comes and goes.

personally, i think building a relationship with an AD should be centered around everything non Rolex initially. if you are a watch collector/aficionado, buy other watches (only if you actually love them!! not for the sake of "building a relationship") and eventually the time will come where you get a call for a watch you have wanted.

I love Rolex, but not enough to buy only models the AD deems im "worthy" to buy in hopes to acquire the one i want down the line.

there will come a time where AD's will be the ones reaching out to us and truly valuing us as clients....not vice versa....the way things are today if we find a watch at an AD its as if the AD is doing US a favor....we are still spending a BIG chunk of change and that should be respected and appreciated. this probably wont happen anytime soon...maybe not even the next 5 years......but it'll come. one thing ive learned in this forum (again in my short time being here) is good things come to those who wait...........or those who get VERY lucky!!! LOL

Do you love it? Do you love something more? Do you feel pressured to buy because of the limited supply? Can you afford it? Answer those questions and you should know.

Even more reason to say no

Screw them if that's their game. Plenty of other watch makes .

This one is easy... DON'T BUY A WATCH YOU DON'T LOVE! That's the problem with these insane sports watch times we are living in. Everyone is so stressed about not being able to get a sports watch that the fear of missing out is just too great.

Guess what, the watch you really want will come in. I passed 2 times on a Sub earlier this year because I didn't have the funds. I figured there was no way I was ever going to get the call. My SA called a third time and I bought it. Don't jump for the sake of jumping. These are too darn expensive to buy something you don't love! That is someone else's grail watch and your AD will appreciate you not buying something you don't love. Don't worry, they won't have a problem selling it!

If you do not love, do not buy.

On a side note: After some of the recent gold-accented watches I've seen, the idea of a stainless bracelet on that watch is intriguing, but probably not enough so to experiment with in this context.

New to TRF but it's sad to see a post like this. Why would you spend $17K+ on a watch you acknowledged you don't love? There's a reason an AD you have no relationship with can get this so quick. Don't be a sucker and and pursue the SS SD43 that you actually want.

I love the SD43 just not in the TT version. And it sounds like you don't either. I would pass and wait for the SS. Or go grey.

Only buy something if you really want it.

That being said, I really like the SD43 model and when the 18K/SS version came out, I jumped on it. They are big watches, but that gives them a really bold presence. It is the only 18K/SS watch that I own.

Definitely nothing with gold. For me this was more simple: I bought a late model Sea Dweller 16600 while still “affordable”. Rolex can keep the shiny and big models produced after that.

I picked up a TT Sub (Yellow Gold) a couple of weeks ago, Black dial. Words do not do justice to how stunning that watch looks.

But again, it's a personal choice. SD is much bigger in size and I am not sure how TT looks on that size. But its hard to go wrong with this unless you really are not much into gold.
