Thank you for the story and I couldn’t agree more. I’d like to add my view to yours:

My first Rolex was pre-owned. It marked a point for me where for the first time in my life, I had money left over after bills. I saved for 2 years and was able to purchase a datejust.

Several years later, I had a significant milestone in my career and purchased my first new Rolex—a 16610 Submariner. This is going to sound corny, but to me it signified that I was going to be successful in my new career. Not only that, but I was enamored by the history and the craftmanship of this watch. I actually would just watch the second hand go around and enjoyed just looking and wearing this watch. It brought such a smile to my face each time I would look at it. I didn’t care if anyone noticed my watch and had no thoughts about selling it. 27 years later, I still own it and wear it often.

It’s been around the world with me, marked career changes, was wearing it during key events (and really daily for years). It’s marked the passage of my time with me. It’s one of the few items that can go through our lives with us.

I understand that some people see these as investments and that’s ok with me. I just hope they aren’t missing out on something more special.

Nice story Padi. Your father sounds like a very cool guy. I’m kind of partial to that generation myself. I’m not sure if you noticed this or not but in your story you did discuss money revolving around Rolex watches several times. Your father had to save for it because they were extremely expensive. He then got a discount (less money)and was able to use the extra “money” to buy a washing machine. I don’t know why you’re so surprised all the time when people discuss Rolex compared to money. They do this with other things also like Mercedes-Benz, Porsche or Lamborghini or any other luxury item. Whether you like it or not Rolex watches are luxury items and always have been. Yes people used them as tool watchs like 60 years ago but even then they were luxury tool watches for the affluent or those who saved up a lot of, dare I say it again, money, for a long time.

Considering how Western Society is morally collapsing all around us I would say people discussing the current cost of Rolex watches and other luxury watches is a very minor change and annoyance. Also look on the bright side. Since prices are dropping due to the economy collapsing I’m sure it’s not too long before we are back to discounts again and therefore the talk of money and Rolex watches will definitely subside a little bit. Of course they will still discuss what discounts they are getting so there will still be discussions about money. Sorry.

Thank you, Peter, perhaps the best post ever on this forum. I agree with the above about 99 percent (99%) rubbish, and will add, nonsense, clearly people who have created multiple accounts who "support each other" and who keep posting the same nonsense over and over and over, the day to day bs, etc. It is a post like this that keeps me from just deleting my account. And to those who have criticized you for your observations, which are not opinions, but, facts, they are so ignorant that they don't even know how ignorant they are.

My father gave me a two tone GMT II in 2007, and at the time it was 10 years old. I believe he bought it new, so he had use of it for a while before giving it to me. The only requirement he gave was that I not sell it. I made the decision then that it would do me no good just sitting on my dresser, so I have worn it most days (85+%) since then.

My father passed a few years ago, and the watch is a reminder of him. Some day the watch will go to one of my children.

Although mine isn’t about a Rolex, Peter’s wonderful story inspired me to share a little story about my dad. He was a very frugal accountant in the ‘80s who always wore a digital Timex and drove a Chevette, but, while he never spent money on himself, my sister and I grew up comfortably. My first word was “clock,” and I was obsessed with Swatches as a kid, so my watches were technically more expensive than my dad’s, which goes to show how selfless he was.

Well, last year, I was talking to him about his Timex watches (he still prefers them,) and I asked him to send me the old, beat up watches in his drawer, just in case something cool was in there. I receive a parcel with simply a sock in it, and, from the sock, I dump a literal wad of “junk” watches onto my table. As I’m untangling all of these cheap digitals, right there, in the mix, is a mint Omega Seamster De Ville from the late ‘60s. I immediately call and ask him about it, and he says “Oh, that must have been a graduation or wedding present.” My mom has since confirmed that was her wedding present to him.

So, now I have an interesting watch in that I never actually saw my dad wear it, as it remained in his jewelry box long before I was born. Being a watch nerd from a young age, I love that my overly-pragmatic, accountant father never thought to mention he had an Omega stashed away, but apparently he didn’t even remember it himself. Not exactly the inherited Rolex Explorer fantasy I have for my own son. Typical dad move.

Paid, thank you for sharing. I love the true stories of grit, hard work and determination. There is a toughness that speaks volumes about your father’s character. And for the watch, the 6263 is my favorite vintage watch. My brother has one and I have worn it on a couple of occasions. It is truly a beautiful time piece and one I hope to own myself one day.

To me Rolex has always been a symbol of prestige and success. It has special meaning to me. Each one. For me it’s not about the latest or greatest but the enjoyment I get from whichever particular watch I’m wearing. I can only imagine how meaningful yours is. And it’s a real beauty! Enjoy it.

I was hoping to start a Rolex story for my family I’ll share below:

My father always wanted Rolex but could never justify it, always put other things as his priority over a watch for himself. He has worn his titanium seiko for over 30 years when his previous watch died.

He is currently caring for my speedy mitsukoshi dial. This is his first mechanical watch, I catch him sitting there admiring the engineering behind it now and then.

He has a big birthday coming up next year so I had purchased a tt sub for him late last year, I wanted a watch with solid history, a little bit of gold, but also the most legible dial and date I could find so he can enjoy the watch at his age. The damn thing started to run slow ><…

I really do hope Rolex go back to their roots and hope this current generation with issues is merely a blip on their long history. I know my dad would dearly love a Rolex and I know I’d dearly love for him to pass it to my son to look after.

Between now and early next year I need to sort something out for dad. Really not sure what to do though :(. A 31xx watch will be my most likely option. I can’t take the risk of giving him something that I know could be a time bomb, he’d be shattered if his first and likely only Rolex turned out to be a lemon. I’d be rather sad not joyful should it turned into a headache for him…

Fascinating story about the War, my in-laws were English and my late Father-in-Law served in Italy, my late Mother-in-law lived through the Blitz spending nights in a bomb shelter in their backyard.

My Father passed at 50, had nothing to remember him by other than an old velvet dinner jacket. When I purchased my Daytona after years of waiting, my goal is one day it will be my son's as well.
