Speaking of wearable ticket out.... I once used it for collateral to borrow a 100 dollar bill from a clothing store's cashier. I need that bill to see a clue for treasure hunt.
If I didn't have my submariner, I wouldn't be able to get the treasure of my lifetime...

It’s been reassuring to know that I could always convert perhaps the last item I may have still attached to my body to a ticket out.
Anywhere in the world a Rolex speaks value.
Now retired I pass the Rolex on to my grandson and tell him, no, it’s not about keeping time it’s about value perceived anywhere on earth.

Yup, that's why successful drug dealers wear furs and jewelry all the time,..it's bail money.

Nowadays, a Rolex will be the reason why you’re in a pickle, not the other way around

My work takes me to conflict zones in Central, West and East Africa. This is not how to extract yourself from the hands of eight guys driving a Toyota 'technical'.

This theory of a Rolex ticket out gets an airing every so often but they will remove your arm and likely worse before they'll negotiate some deal. If if one thug wants your Rolex, there are about 200 other thugs in any chain of activity that would get you out of the country. Guys carrying the kind of kit that they do are not diplomats.

Central Africa is littered with the remains of travellers who thought that their charm or their radio or a wad of cash would save them. Show them the Rolex and 30 seconds later they have taken it by force and you're just all out of luck.

Staying alive is a bit more complex and involves the right guides, the right 'official fees', the right transport and the right time of day. You also need kidnap and ransom insurance. If your only exit strategy is showing them your Submariner, your minutes are numbered.

I took this pic outside Goma. The guys in that armoured vehicle are not your friends.

I'd rather a Sat Phone over a Rolex if I'm somewhere getting stuck could be an issue

If you've found yourself penniless in a foreign land, with no way to get in contact with people you know who could be of aid, walking up to a random stranger and offering to trade your Rolex for a ride out of town sounds like a good way to end up buried behind a building without your Rolex

I've worn Rolex's in West Africa , Iraq and Siberia.
In most of these places they would have taken my watch and still buried me in a ditch so you might as well die wearing a reliable timepiece

Urban legends always beat reality, at least for some.

Good to know that I can trade in my Rolex as a last resort when I hit hard times in Somalia. Appreciate the heads up

Your watch is not going to save your life in Syria, or in unstable African states.

But how about if, as a tourist, you are stopped at a road block by some corrupt police officers in India, Indonesia, Thailand, Mexico...?

The idea that you can give someone who was going to harm or kill you your watch and they would let you be on your way is silly. You are relying on someone who values a possession as useless as a wristwatch more than human life to have some kind of ethics.

That was probably more true 50 years ago when people had honor. Now I’m afraid they would just take the watch and do what they want with you anyway.

Most people with contrary view points have taken the bad situation to an extreme. Of course if you are already a prisoner then the watch will just be taken. If you are in a dark alley, about to be shot for the cash in your wallet then the watch on your wrist is not going to save you.

Trading it for a tank of gas, or maybe even a car? That is a real possibility.

This happened in Ukraine when the war started. Guy went in to get out his employee and his family. Got to border and needed a car. The guy traded his watch for the car and got the family out. It wasn’t a Rolex though. It was a Breitling.

I am speaking about BEFORE anarchy

When I mentioned Nazi Germany , I was referring to before all hell broke loose. When there was still a semblance of order . Many Jewish people got out in the early and mid 30's by bribing officials . When the slaughter started it was too late .
