I always walk right through wearing it - never goes off.

Strangely, my sons belt buckle (which is much smaller) sets it off.

I wear mine all the time and it's never caused a problem. Although a couple months ago, the TSA guy in Reno asked if mine was real because fakes can set it off!

I have no problem with security whatsoever, after all it is for our own good.
i do have a problem with taking off my very expensive watch in a BUSY area and putting it in a plastic box that goes into a conveyor belt and comes out 20 feet away in a place i cannot see, while the security guard is running me up and down with that portable doohickey. This happened to me in a very busy terminal and i was really nervous.

I never take it off at the airport. It never sets off the alarm.

I travel both domestically and internationally quite frequently for business reasons and have for the last 15 years or so. I always wear one of my Rolexes and have never been asked to remove it (I wear it through the metal detector). Only one exception - last June, I was en-route to Paris through Frankfurt Airport and was asked to remove my GMT II.

In some overseas places I have been asked to take it off my watch with everything else including belts and wallets. The rules change depending on the country and sometimes the mood of the security people.

Now I just toss it in into my briefcase which goes on the belt behind my laptop. Then I keep an eye on both as they go through the scanner. That way I am keeping an eye on the two most expensive things I have with me.

sometimes my watches set of the detectors and sometimes they don't, I stopped gambling and I put the watch deep in my shoe, my jacket pocket or my wifes purse, its a non-issue for me since I started doing that

For my photography gear and negative film, I always ask for a hand inspection where they do not put it through the x-ray machine, but I've never ask that for a watch.
Wear it on my wrist as God intended and walk on through. Period.

Its all good Al...just before you hit the security just put it inside your jacket and put inside the conveyor...it will be fine...

why would you even think about taking it off to go through security, it won't set off the metal detectors and I've never been asked to take my watch off. I would refuse if they asked.

no, I didn't mean to imply that! Unless you have a guilty conscience, LOL. jk. I just meant that I've never had the happen to me and I've been wearing Rolex for ten years, and i travel a lot! I don't even like my bracelet to touch the case back of my watch. The thought of letting it go through an Xray machine makes me ill!

No worries I was just pulling your leg. I've learned after the fact that most likely in my case its not the watch that sets off the detector its the combination of the watch and the belt buckle I wear. But for me its easier to take off my watch then my belt, and the watch is insured and I have no issue with the xray machine so different strokes...

I go though the airport security on an almost daily basis due work. I never take my watch off. Speed is the key! Swing your arm though, it will not set the machine off. If on the other hand you dawdle though the arch even a 5c coin will set it off.

Ha! I got the wand at the airport in Erie, PA, and it went off because of the aluminum foil on the Wrigleys gum in my pocket.

Of course the airfield is named 'TOM RIDGE FIELD', Pennsylvania's Governor,

before he was named head of Homeland Security!

What Rolex do you wear when traveling in Europe?

I am leaving on a month trip throughout Europe and am wondering about the safety of wearing one of my Rolex watches. I'm old and don't hang out in dingy bars (although I am thinking about it) but do spend time in market places, etc. My everyday watch is a sub 14060 on a Nato strap. I have a 1968 Oyster Date which is much more understated. Also have a SS Speedking that is small but a very fine watch. For dress wear I also have a 1927 Silver Cushion but tend not to expose it to the elements for obvious reason. I like wearing my Rolexes but also have some older Omegas, Citizen Eco-drive, Hamilton which I wouldn't mind losing if it came to it. It is paranoia? Any advise is welcome.

Please don't do this again!

I went through the San Fran airport security. Wore my Milgauss through the detector. (ack, never had a problem at Seattle Sea Tac before).... The Officer directed me back to place my watch through the treadmill scanner. I placed it in the SMALL plastic box.

It went through with some larger items sandwiching it. Knapsack, carry-on, etc.

After about a minute of standing by the exit to the XRay machine, and other Travellers behidn me grabbing their bags and leaving I finally asked, where the blazes is my watch??! The Officer with the scanner that told me to go back and put my watch through wasn't interested and didn't answer. The Woman standing behind the Xray Monitor screen was dumfounded. Eventually someone other than them checked inside their machine and found the SMALL tray flipped over. He then looked under the metal cranks and tracks and found my watch lying on the tile.

Please, please use a watch pouch travel case, Place in carry-on, or even in zippered pocket. Do not use these small plastic trays!!

Pretty sure if you can wear a watch in Nevada (the safe haven that it is...) you can probably wear it in Europe.

Just use common sense, as with anywhere.

I leave my Rolex on. It doesn't set off any alarms in most of the airports I've been in.
