Robert Downey, JR. Just watch Chaplin - you'll see what I mean. He's has incredible gamma of acting abilities, IMO.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Robin Williams I thought he was great in "The Fisher King" and World according to Garp. He's come a long way since "Mork and Mindy"

Maybe not underated, but watch "Casualties of War" with Shawn Penn and Michael J Fox. Tell me that Shawn Penn is not the most intense in character actor out there. When he takes on a roll he becomes the character. Amazing actor.

I have to say that while every actor here is great, not every one is what I would call 'underrated'. In fact, several have won Oscars, and others have been nominated.

Oscar winner: Sean Penn, Hackman, Duvall, Williams
Oscar nominated: Cheadle, Dafoe, Lithgow

* I know, KansaiVet, you did say "maybe not underrated" on Penn

Robert Duvall gets my vote. He has a depth of talent that is seldom seen.
