Wow, I guess it’s true, a lot of people are getting the text or call.

Wait…I haven’t received either!

Congratulations on the watch, wear it in good health.

Great comparison photo. The 40mm def looks dramatically better to my eye than the 39 but I do prefer the OG 36mm model. I tried on the 39mm model back in the day and passed on it. I do have a smaller wrist though.

If the 36 worked for my overall frame, it would definitely be my choice… specifically the 124270… but the 114270 is also great and obviously the 1016 is an icon. The 36 looks fine when I’m wearing a shirt with cuffs, but in a t-shirt it just looks off on me.

In terms of the larger sizes, I think if you prefer a matte dial, the 39mm is the way to go. 40mm if you prefer glossy.

I think every Explorer is great, but then again, it’s my favourite watch of all time, so I’m a little biased. Ultimately, which one you prefer comes down to your body and wrist sized and/or personal preference. Choice is a good thing :-)

The explorer, whichever model is one of the true “one watch watch”
I have a 114270 & 214270……if I wasn’t a watch addict, those would be my only watches.

Thanks - this confirms to me the 214270 is one of the best looking sports watches Rolex has made. Way more interesting looking watch for what’s an admittedly no-nonsense design.

The matte dial and explorer text below the handset do just enough to make the piece interesting (matte dial) and unique amongst the rest of the line (text position). Also I think the smaller bracelet works better to help the watch itself pop on the wrists.

Both a beautiful and you can’t go wrong with any explorer

I am quite surprised you have a new release model. I thought these would be released closer to the late summer. Congrats. Any indication from your AD as to why you got an early allocation

Congrats, it looks great! Really like that they brought back the larger format, and I hope to try one on soon. I just really wish it had crown guards (Air King I know I know…..)

Fantastic shot. 36mm's on the left, the new 40 on the top right, and the 39 on bottom right.

I have the 114270, it is really too small on me (even according to all family members) but I have had it for so long I can't be bothered with selling it.

The 39 I've owned twice, but it was just off a bit.

I am really hoping this new 40 will do the trick for me. If I can get hold of one...

Don’t understand when “purists” feel that 36mm is the best version.

I think the 40mm looks great.

The 40mm looks great!

is the 39mm not a lacquered dial? Appears to be matte

So the dial on the 40 is jet black and that on the 39 is dark gray?

Thanks for this.

On wrist I definitely think the 124270 looks best by quite a ways.

Congrats. I literally just now left a reply to your post on Instagram on this. I very much prefer the deep black dial of this new one over the 39 mm matt black dial. Looks great on you and wear out in good health.

An additional observation about the differences between the 39m and 40mm models… the 40mm’s endlinks seem to extend a fair bit further than the 39mm model’s, which I imagine could effect the wearability for some people with shorter wrist spans. It’ll be interesting to see how much of a difference it makes once someone does a hands on with both models.

The 40 does seem to be around 1mm or so shorter, lug-to-lug, so it could be that the endlink-to-endlink measurement is the same or ver close for both models.

Congrats on the pickup! I’m still a fan of the 39 personally. I think the “Explorer” text looks more balanced on the bottom.

Congrats OP! And thanks for the comparison shots. I think the new 40 looks great. I'll hold onto my 39 because also owning a Sub I like the contrast of my 39's matte dial.
