The black dial looks way better in person, the white is more photogenic, when i saw the bial dial i knew i had to have it, i would like the white dial too..but black was my first choice...its a little "dressier" imo

I have a black face Daytona and prefer the black to the white face but........ when I buy my Explorer is will have to be a white face.

I was also led to believe that the black is more sought after.

Daytona Black dial is way more classy than the white dial. It look nice especially in contrast with its shiny bezel. Would love yo have one. The turn-off for me is just that it doesnt have a date.

White vs Black Daytona

That's what I ended up doing! I bought my white Daytona 5 years ago (when the price was over a third lower than the current MSRP!).
IMHO it's the most beautiful white-faced watch Rolex makes.

About a year ago I found myself lusting after a black Daytona as well. 2 weeks ago I finally gave in and bought one.

You really can't go wrong - both the white and black are extraordinary watches, and as long as you take reasonable care of your Daytona and didn't pay above MSRP, you can pretty easily sell it later without taking much (if any) of a financial hit. However, I have no current plans to sell either of mine!

Congratulations and enjoy your new beauty - wear it well!

Black SS at different angles

You can't go wrong with either black or white face SS Daytona. I particularly like the zenith white.

I think white is generally considered more desireable.

Personally, I like the black. However, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but if in three years he decides he wants white instead, won't Rolex switch it for him at the service center?

I have taken my watch to change the black dial to white. I love the black dial but since I got the GMT IIC I decided to do this and have a white dial in my collection.

It will cost me $600 and I will still have the black dial with me which I can revert back whenever I want.

Are you sure Rolex will return the black dial to you after they make the change?

Yes they will. They will not return some aftermarket crap, but a legitimate dial that is still current they will return.

I rec'd a call from an AD about 2 months ago stating they had a white SS Daytona and I passed on it. Went to Las Vegas last week, walked into an AD and asked if they had a black SS Daytona, they had just rec'd one and didn't keep a waiting list. I knew enough to not leave it there, but have to admit that I'm not nearly as familiar with Rolex as the people in this forum. I have a SS AirKing that I bought 4 years ago...so now this is my second Rolex. Did I make a mistake in not picking up the white one? Or is the black equally as desirable? I initially thought the white was a bit sharper but when I saw the black one in person, I was impressed and bought it. That said, it's been with me for a week and is still sitting in the box with all the plastic protectors etc on it. I guess I'm looking for some insight from those of you, here, that may know better than me before I take it out and put it on. Last question, it's a V Serial nbr, how is that diff't from others I've read about here (M, F, etc)?

Looking forward to whatever insight you all may have.

Regards,
BM
Of course you should get what you like... not what others like... but I share your thoughts since I have always preferred white dialled watches when "dreaming" of them, but when I really buy watches some 75% of them are black dialled... and I find that black dialled watches looks better on my wrist.

Enjoy your watch! It is a great looking Rolex.

Best,

A

It's definetly a personal matter. What ever catches your eye and pleases your senses is really the correct choice.
In my case the white dial called out loud to me. all my other Rolex sport watch are black dial, with the exeption of my bluessy's.
So white really added some color to the collection:)

dannyp - thanks for the insight (and to all others that weighed in as well). I had no idea that I could have the dial switched out within the first 3 years.

The stickers & hang tags are off - it's now out of the box and on my wrist. Will get some pics up as soon as I figure out how to take some that are worthy of showing on this forum.

To everyone else that gave their opinion & insight - I thank you. This is a great forum, with great members. Very happy I joined and submitted the post for discussion. Looking fwd to participating more in the future.
Best regards,

I personally chose a black face b/c it felt and looked more sporty. I had the choice of black or white so I've tried both on before. The black just did it for me. Don't get me wrong though, the white face is a beautiful watch and I would love to own a Zenith white face one day as well. That one is absolutely gorgeous and I have an uncle who has one as well. The color contrast between the white face and black dial rims are absolutly stunning and classic.

But until then.........I have no regrets with my black face.

This would be a real tough choice. They are both so beautiful. I have encountered geographic preferences for black or white. In my neck of the woods, white is more desirable and in higher demand.

I had the same issue with the Explorer II. I thought I wanted white from all the pictures on the net until I got to the AD and saw them side by side. I couldn't decide, so I left without one.

Glad you're enjoying it! To clarify, there's nothing magic about 3 years, just threw that out there. You could send the watch to Rolex tomorrow and pay the going rate to have the dials swapped.

Though I am of the opinion black looks better for that watch (and almost all sports watches), especially with the silver sub-dials, which can be harder to read on a white background.

I prefer the black dial in a 116520 and white in the 16520.

Ideally, both. But if I had to choose one, I'd go with black - it's more universal and goes with everything and for any occasion. White is a bit more casual.
