Can’t help with Alaska but have an off grid property with well, solar, propane. Happy to talk about all that if you’d like. Pm me for my # if that’s of any value to you! This sounds epic.

I am in the process of getting my private pilots license. By the time we would be staying there for a week or so at a time during the spring/summer I would guess we own either a sea plane or a bush plane if the property has access for one. If the property is accessible only by truck then we will have it stored in Nome, same with the plane.

Being away from civilization isn’t a problem. Although I’d prefer to be within an hour or so of a city just so we can do something or get something if needed. Not to mention, I don’t want to travel hours and hours into the bush when I’m already tired from a flight.

The place we are looking at is about 11 miles from the shore and 14 miles from Nome if I remember correctly. It’s only accessible by truck. There is a smaller property farther away from everything that’s on the water. It’s only accessible by sea plane or boat. Both are options but I think it’d be best for us and the family if we aren’t too far from a city.

I’ve killed enough things in my day so no, I plan on bringing rations for the duration of our trip. If something was to happen I have a multitude of MRE’s and shelf stable water and presume I would have enough shelf stable water and MRE’s at the property in case all hell broke loose to survive for a month or so. If I need to kill something to eat I have no issue with it and am proficient but it would be because of necessity. I much prefer to watch a big buck or bill walk past, knowing I could do him yet letting him go on to live another day and do his thing.

Amazon delivery means nothing. I feel that defeats the purpose of the entire idea. That said, I’m sure we will have a P.O. Box wherever so we can receive mail in case there is something business related.

Medical services is a big deal but it’s not at the same time. I carry a trauma kit in all of my vehicles. I have given stitches and staples not to mention tourniquets, nasopharyngeal airways and chest seals among the normal first aid to stabilize and stop bleeding. As long as the golden hour isn’t too far off I’m comfortable.

Police I’m not worried about. I doubt they’re that responsive anyways when you’re outside a town.

They always say Europe is 10 yrs ahead of us. So it doesn’t surprise me those Germans were trying to escape. I presume many Americans as well as those from all lands will be looking for an escape from technology and electronic tethers sooner than later.

Please bare in mind, we’re not running. We would maintain all of our properties in Florida and still reside here permanently unless something drastic was to happen. We are just looking for another piece of property that is different from everything else we have and see everyday.

Glad to hear you’ll be within reach of civilization.
Basic first aid stuff is a big plus.

An interesting adventure for sure.

Another option would be to use conex’s. Weld in the steel frame doors and windows. It would probably be the safest against bears.

Be safe and on a serious note - access to civilization is a priority. If they have to air drop necessities and the weather is bad it can be hairy.

One of my buddies goes up every year with a bunch of guys. They took a float plane to get to the cabin. This year - one key member passed away. The pilot crashed and didn’t survive. Luckily for my friend that was for a different group; pilot was very experienced -decades worth of bush piloting.

Might not want to have your wife read this thread.

They have shotguns with slugs and a Desert Eagle. I’m not even sure a 50 cal is enough but that’s just me.

YOLO in any event - it might be the most satisfying project of your life!

Great insight!!

Unfortunately, you can prepare and be as or more experienced than everyone else but when it’s your time, it’s your time. At least that’s how I look at it. My condolences on the loss of your buddy.

Ok, I have skimmed this a bit and may have missed a thing or two.

Have you been to Alaska before? From Florida, it’s really a long haul. I did it from Massachusetts, flew to Vancouver, then Anchorage. Even Vancouver to Anchorage is a haul.
But, you’re thinking close to Nome? Whoa. Maybe you’ll spend a month there, but good luck getting friends and family wanting that trek.

Best of luck, but after seeing all those Alaska reality shows and realizing how difficult being off the grid is up there, I’d pass. Heck, one trip up there with the wife, might end up making it the last one with the wife.

Best of luck, sir.

Sounds like a fantastic adventure Goat...follow your dreams, as they say.

You could try Scotland, it's very beautiful...no bears, they speak English, of a sort, and
have I mentioned the Single Malts in abundance.

I have. I understand it’s a trek. However. It’s a change from our norm and is very attractive to us as a getaway spot.

I’m not set on Nome. I’m open to anywhere that meets my earlier stated guidelines. Just happens the properties we’ve looked at and liked thus far have been close to Nome.

I don’t watch reality tv, so I’ve never seen these shows about living off the grid.

Mine is happy anywhere that’s cozy and has books and food. I’m a lucky man.

I’m not in anyway disparaging this guy but if he can do it, I can do it. https://youtu.be/Hfvd1UdnGlE

We are interested in properties outside of the country and have looked at Scotland. There was an island we were interested in there. It turned out to be a bird mating ground for like 20 different species though and had a working lighthouse. Seemed there would be too many regulations, restrictions to comply with.

Good luck with this project MrGoat, and be sure to share the process here so we can all follow along!

P.S. There isn't much reality in "reality" shows, so I wouldn't use those for guidance.

Spent a summer in Alaska back in the 90s. Stayed mostly in Fairbanks but got to see a lot of the state and I loved it. The area around Ketchikan is great. Good luck in your endeavor.

It has been on my radar for a while and now it’s got the ability to come to fruition.

I have looked at many properties online and I know what will need to be done physically to build my cabin. I expect after a season or two of building we will use it for around a month a year and let family and friends use it the rest of the time. Anyone here ever done something similar? Live/lived in Alaska? I am open to any knowledge learned you’re willing to share.

As of right now I’m looking at properties that abut water that’s large and calm enough to land a sea plane (she isn’t happy about me buying a seaplane but I think waterfront would be better in the long run) or properties that have road or trail access. I’d be open to properties that are landlocked by others for cheap if I can work out an easement access.

It’s always been a goal of mine to have a desolate cabin where it’s only my family and nature.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Can’t help on the property, but I’ve built two log homes in NC, and there are many variations and styles, pending the regional resources available. Round vs. rectangular, chink fill vs. flush fit, dovetail vs. round groove corners, truss style…………. etc. You’ll find someone locally who will have all the info you need, should be some specific forum for AK backcountry building.

Watch some shows and read about Dick Proenneke, you’ll be hooked ! I watched everything I could find on YouTube and bought the books !

Sounds like an adventure to me!
Wife and I have been several times for fly fishing. Usually for about 3 weeks at a time. Beautiful country, great fishing and mosquitoes the size of hummingbirds. On our first trip we were with our pilot in a vey remote (most of Alaska) area and he asked what did I carry in my shoulder holster. I told him and he asked if I filed the front sight off. I said no and he said that I should, then it wouldn’t hurt as much when a grizzly stuck it up my a**.
Best of luck with following a dream!

Sounds like you should do it and can afford to do it and if and when you decide it’s not for you, you can just move onto something else. I am just going to assume you are in Naples and wish you all the best. It sounds fun especially with the skills you have.

I guess it could be considered more suncoast? IMO anything south of Tampa Bay and west of Sebring is considered SW. The corridor from Tampa to Gainesville to Otown is considered central. But realistically, what do I know? This is just how I’ve thought about it for my 30+ yrs of being a resident here. Though this is what visit Florida says is South west.

Today I am almost as South West as you can get. Woke up early. Drove to Marco island. Had breakfast at my favorite place Doreen’s cup of joe and been lounging on south beach all day swimming and eating and people watching and napping.

Back to Naples for dinner at Tommy Bahama tonight with some friends. Have a great day in the sunshine state.
