Congratulations!
I love restorations like this, the "life" the watch has lead is still there to be seen and felt, one of the main points about collecting vintage I think. I love it when I get a watch with personal engraving on it. Recently I purchased an accutron which had been presented to it's orginal owner as a 25 year service award. Love that kind of history but for it to be one's own families history is even more important. I bet you can't wait to get the extra links

Amazing piece Jim. Conrats on having it in the first place, but I am sure its well deserved. Must be a great feeling to have her back. I'm never shy about saying how much more classy those old Rolex can be and won't be now.

Absolutely timeless and so much better looking than many they make today.

Once again conrats on a superlative Rolex.

Patrick

In February 08 I sent my watch to a specialist Rolex watch repairer; Mr Tylden Reed! The Oyster Date has been in my family for a long time and I am the third generation of my family to own it.

The watch needed a service and the existing original rivet bracelet was in desperate need of repairs.

As the watch is over 50 years old, we struggled to find original Rolex parts for the Oyster bracelet in the UK.

With the help of Steve Mulholland (thanks again pal ), we were able to source some original parts in the USA including a replacement clasp.

Anyway, today after nearly 18 months the watch was returned to me. The watch has been fully serviced (parts are very scarce for this cal. and have been hard to source), repaired and parts have been polished such as the case sides and the bracelet. The rear of the watch is original and untouched and features all of the scratches, dings and metal pitting as requested...it features my grandfather's name engraved into the caseback!

So pics...they aint great as the available light was awful but I figured a few photos would be a nice way to celebrate her return (I'll get some this weekend next to Martin's older model hopefully!!!).

On the stand kindly sent by my good friend overseas...I've waited a long time to put this watch on the stand!

The dial has had a very light clean to remove a little of the salt that was left by the original damage. The gilt is now much more visible.

Closer...you can see the patina from the saline ingress and the damage to the rehault.

You can now really see the remaining salt crust around the markers. The gilt text on the dial is now much more legible!

I missed her so much!!!!!

Wristshot???? Unfortunately not!!!!! The bracelet was much more damaged than we thought and many of the rivet pins had deteriorated causing damage to the folded metal links. I'm about a link or two short (including the extra links Steve sent!!!) so after a while I'll have a look for some new parts so I can hopefully soon start wearing her again!

J
So VERY sweet Jim!!

Beautiful. I am sure you are happy to see it after all this time. A family heirloom like that is priceless.

Very nice, Jim......what a beautiful piece of classic horology.

I hope you can find those extra links and trust the band is reliable enough once you decide to wear it regularly.

Are those hands and markers gold?

Cheers & congrats - JJ

Thanks all.

I really do appreciate the comments. It's always been special to me and I'm glad others feel the same way!

JJ...they are most definitely gold

Interesting point...last year I saw a "sister" 6534 Oyster Date 1957 with the exact same markers apart from them being white gold on a cream dial. I thought it might be cool to own another configuration of the same watch but when I contacted the company it had been sold

Something to look for in the future.

What a lovely watch - you have a beauty there! I especially like the dial and the "shark's tooth" markers at 6 and 9 o'clock.

Nice!

Jim, what a beautiful and fantastic watch you have there. It's pretty cool to own a watch your grandfather wore and was handed down to you. And with you having a son someday you will pass it a long to him!!!
