Hi Paul,
Interesting. The service casebacks Im talking about are post mid 80's or after the models got discontinued. I would agree that they transitioned over the years. A few things I found interesting/ weird: Rolex's website: 1985 904L started. 16700 started around 1988 and some casebacks have the 16700 stamp but no 'Rugby ball'. 16610 started around 1987 (the ref after the 168000 btw). Some casebacks have the 16610 stamp on caseback but no 'Rugby ball'. 16520 started around 1987, first few years didn't have it on the caseback. You would think or expect the stamp would be there atleast with new releases. :) What makes me wonder also is: If it is to indicate the use of 904L steel, why put it on gold casebacks? On the topic of casebacks, Im sure you all know, the 4 digits started being used instead of the reference stamp on some models from 1999/2000. |

Good points Mo. Yes it's all a bit inconsistent I agree.
Anyone got a 85/86 16660 with an original to watch, oval stamped caseback per chance ?
