Some will see it as virtue signalling, and that a specific, Negro league, could be seen as racist.

I’ve worn NL gear since I was a kid. In Pittsburgh they have always been a thing.

The Negro leagues happened because of racism: black baseball players were excluded from the major and minor leagues from 1888 to 1945. It was only a few months ago though that the MLB integrated Negro league stats into its own records.

If you like it, wear it.

Who would know?

I would never have known if I saw this hat out in the wild, and I’ve been a baseball fanatic since I was 10 years old.

I’d be super surprised if anyone who would be prone to violence or be really put out by it would know what it is. Seems very “inside baseball” and a sign of respect for almost anyone who would recognize it.

Firstly, I truly appreciate the kind words many of you have written and it is a great compliment to know I’ve made those impressions on you all.

Secondly, I asked the question not because of fear of getting my ass kicked. I asked because I believe the negro leagues to be a great source of pride and identity to some in the African American community and did not want to infringe on that and wanted to ensure my intention of respect and admiration for those pioneers would be what is conveyed.

Thirdly, My question appears to have triggered a few of you, pump the brakes guys, you speak that racism isn’t a thing but are the ones that inserted people of color into the question. I was honestly more worried about some virtue signaling progressive white person trying to cancel me over being “insensitive to the struggles of racial segregation” or “something something white privilege”. I actually thought any person of color that knew it was a negro leagues cap would know just by the hat and the fact I don’t look at or treat anyone any differently that it was meant as respect.

Brian, if you’re giving out hugs count me in for at least two. I can damn near always use a good hug these days.

Austin, the Jville Red Caps hat is pretty doggone sharp looking. I may have to buy a few different caps to switch it up and give to some of my guys.

Thank you all for your comments and it appears the majority says the ones that don’t know don’t matter and the ones that do will see it for what it’s meant, as appreciation, respect and admiration for those that didn’t let idiocy of others stop their love of the game.

Do you believe it would be insensitive of me to wear a specific Negro Leagues cap?

Despite the consideration you show, i put it to you that you should be able to wear whatever you like without fear of discrimination, prejudice, racism and generally free of being marginalised or whatever
Or is that what you're affraid of?
If it should come to pass, then it definately says more about the other party unless you are somehow appropriating culture that is not aligned with your own.
Then again, context is everything
It's a really nice cap and if one likes the design then go for it

Very well put - on subject I know nothing of such a league or cap, but I’m sure if people recognise someone’s best intentions then it’s done for the right reason …

I wore my Padres hat in Philly & no one said anything! And my Sub Date! And I wasn't robbed at gunpoint!

To the OP: I'd wear it. It's a hat. If an older black person recognizes it, it'll likely be a good conversation starter.

Funny, I just complemented a guy wearing an Expos jersey at a MN Twins game a couple of weeks ago.

Any throwback hat is going to be fine at a baseball park.

I worked on landsdown street in Boston. Along the green monster. I worked the door. I wore my Yankees hat. Didn’t go over well. But I’m still here. :-)

lol. I go to a bunch of road Padres games. Always wearing Pads gear. Only Yankee stadium had a guy say “”F***the Padres!” It felt so NYC. I started laughing.

As a cat owner, I am offended by your comment.

I think that 99% of the people that would see that hat would not understand its significance, and of those 1% remaining, they would likely appreciate your support. It's the fashion police that you need to worry about.

But seriously, yeah, if there's any doubt, then you probably shouldn't be wearing it.

I’m kinda surprised the owners let you do that. That’s the real life version of Russian roulette. Particularly if you worked the post game shift.

The people that would be offended are silly. I'm a black guy and would think of it as a great convo starter. I know I'd probably ask about it...do you.

I have no clue or opinion of whether you should wear it. I'm not black, don't have a cat, and I'm a Cubs fan.

But dang, that's a sweet looking hat. I love that retro panther logo on the side and nice nostalgic font on the front. Whether you wear it or not you should definitely buy it anyway.

Wow, this thread got a bit weird.

GOAT, wear an Alaska hat. I've met you, and that authentic can-do resourceful strong and independent American spirit fits you well.

Not feeling an Alaska hat yet, not really big on state hats to be frank. I saw this cap and I just fell in love with it. The history of the league and my respect for the men that played for the love of the game, the nose snub at the culture that made it so there even had to be a Negro League and the uniqueness of this cap drew me to it.

Thank you for the compliment though. If that’s the impression people get from me when we meet, I am much more interesting than I tell myself I am.
