I have to agree with Padi. Sub should be in steel. For a first gold piece, the DD is the way to go. Plus, it doesn't show scratches which is a big plus on a gold bracelet watch.

First, buy what you like better. Personally, I would go with the DD.

I am a PM Sub/GMT fan all the way. I give the edge to the Sub with its outstanding glidelock which is invaluable for such a heavy watch IMO. I understand the Professional line in stainless is the standard but in PM that would be the way I’d go. I like the more sporty, upscale, adventurous look it gives. It screams “alpha watch” to me every time I see one in the wild.
I think it will age better with its ceramic bezel over the pm fluted bezel which I have some experience with.

Gold DD then pick up a steel sub for bumming around.

If you don’t get the sub you’re going to always want it. Get the one you really want. I prefer the 11 sub. I have the blue dial but I want the black. I don’t like the clasp on the newer subs it’s more suited to the sd43 IMO

Based on your own feedback, definitely the Sub.

Add the Day Date down the road still. It’s a really nice one.

I would go for the Sub. It seems a perfect fit for your lifestyle. Day/Date is small and has a more formal look which you state you do not want.

I would go with a DD albeit a different dial color. They are both flashy but the good Sub more so .

Sub will always be a "tool" watch to me so stainless steel. The gold DD is an all-time classic.

Sub, but only the blue one! Black one doesn't do it for me.

First Solid Gold - DayDate or Sub

You could do a sky dweller
I have two dd40s and YG/ black sub- love them all but wear the YG/ black sky the most by far.
Otherwise- I’d start w the YG sub it’s really cool but you’ll wind up w a DD also eventually

If 40mm is the diameter of choice, I’d go with the Submariner.

I’m a Day-Date 36 guy.

I would definitely go for the Submariner. I chose the blue, but I also had the TT Bluesy for 31 years. It was my only Rolex and was my daily, except when I went through the ‘apple watch’ phase …lol
I have always considered the ‘formal’ Rolex’s more of a ‘board room’ corporate watch.
Last month, I sold my TT and upgraded to the full gold 18kt Blue Sub. I love it. I really like the ‘heft’ and feel that comes with a precious metal timepiece. I am a 62 yo oral surgeon and it gets worn daily in my practice and lifestyle. Weekends it goes to the lake and weekdays it goes to the operatory.
That said, I also just picked up a Deep Sea James Cameron Sea-Dweller. It is in the rotation as well. I am thrilled with it as well. I wore a Breitling Super Chronomat for over a year so the size doesn’t bother me at all. It too can go from the office to the lake.
I would wear either one to a wedding or any formal event and fit in just fine.
I love the ‘professional’ watches so much that I am on the ‘list’ with two local ADs for a Batgirl and am also looking for a precious metal Daytona ….I hope to get the call for a Everose Gold with the chocolate dial soon ….maybe this week….I tried it on yesterday and hope they will let me purchase it. :)

I did go with one of the ‘trusted’ sellers on the forum for both pieces because they were both available at a substantial discount over the ADs, and both still have a couple years of factory warranty in effect.

Having owned both in different variations, I would suggest that you go with the DD first for that wham, full gold Rolex experience. Get the Sub down the road if you feel that the Submariner is truly that model that you want the most luxurious version of.

It’s an interesting point about the most luxurious version of. I never thought of it like that.

All the reasons you listed I’d go Submariner, DD later. I Love and enjoy the Sub daily. Looking forward to your decision and cheers to enjoying this journey

I have the WG sub and YG day date 40 - If I had to have one (in YG) I’d probably get the sub (but in blue).
I’m also a casual dresser and work from home.
I will say, though, that whenever I put on the DD it feels pretty damn special.

Good luck!

I'd go for both but if the sub sings to you more, go with it.

Sounds like there a ton of fans on both sides. Just decided to go with the Sub for now.

And I imagine that I've get a Day Date down the road for sure. They are both freakin amazing. But for the next number of years, I think a more sporty gold look is what I'd like to go with.

Thanks for all the advice, info and photos! I'll upload a pic once I get it in hand!

The sub is far superior in looks. I don't think the size and heft of the deepsea looks classy and takes away from the watch itself.

Currently looking at the Day Date 40 and the gold sub, black dial. Would love any recommendations. I'm 45 years old and 6'4" with large wrists. So the day date looks a little small on me but man, that bracelet is amazing. And the full gold is so classic.

Then there's the sub. In full gold, it's so badass. I like the black dial more than the blue. I'm know it would fit me perfect. I work from home and generally dress fairly casual. Looking for a watch that I would wear most days. Slightly concerned the day date could feel a little too dressy.

I just feel like the sub is right choice... but again, there's something so special about the day date. Maybe I just get the sub now and day date down the road. What do you guys think?

I would go with the Sub, I know that you said you like the black dial but everyone has their preferences, I have the blue dial which I love.
