Good morning all!

FYI - Slugs love beer. I have a beautiful hosta in the back yard that gets munched every year by those critters (excuse me, the children informed this morning that slugs are amphibians). I put a container out last night, and this morning there are about 20 slugs in there. Party at the hosta plant!

Right now, I am making a cheesecake, listening to NPR, and checking TRF - in that order...

Caroline, so you liked my suggestion for the non chemical removal of slugs. Just think right now Oleemptybeermug1957 is crying out for the non sanctioned use of perfectly good beer!!!

Yes, I'm a natural type of gardener. I had no idea it would work so well, though! I promised Max that he could check them out when he gets home from school.

I'm sure Max will think that it's cool to see the slugs in the beer!!!
Sort of like men being drawn to beer. Maybe this is how to ensnare Joe to keep him in line.....

That makes two of us who need a little patience right about now!

What bothers me most is to see June having all her toys snatched away from her, while this kid acts like a 2 year old and says, "I WANT THESE! YOU CAN'T HAVE THEM!" and June just smiles at me and says, "it's okay. I don't mind." June's just so happy to have a friend over, she can put up with more than I can!

Are you having a little vacation, Leo? Little Rock had some good antique shopping as I recall....

Half an hour to go.... she's not a whiner as much as an aggressive, obnoxious brat. Just now I had to go in to June's room and shush her once more - she was screeching and shrieking and Violet's trying to nap - and she was trying to yank June's shorts off. June is too gentle a kid to stand up for herself... hopefully we can discuss this after the kid goes home, but I think June will just keep saying, "It's okay. I didn't mind at all..."

How do you help your nice, decent kid learn not to let other kids walk all over them?

So what, if anything would you say to the mom? I have only met her once before.... hopefully the issue of any more playdates won't come up again soon, since there's only one more week of school....

C, I know you've had similar issues very recently. Ironic, but sadly there is no shortage of kids who need guidance about manners and how to treat their friends.....

Lisa, we flew into L. R. Arkansas this afternoon for our niece's wedding tomorrow. As an added bonus we get to visit with our son for three days!!!
We left this morning in 50ish weather and rain and landed in L.R. to high 80's and sunshine. It's nice to see the sun and have warm weather since Chicago has had a cold, wet spring.....
As for June, she'll be okay even though you have the terror visiting from He!!. If I may say, children have a way of working things out. Even though you do not want to see her taken advantage of she will learn from the experience and be a better person for it.....

I'd just avoid the subject of playdates. "Yeah, we're not doing playdates for a while - that last one just wore me out...".

Re: aggressive kids vs. good natured ones:

It was a difficult subject to broach for me. I had to explain that "Jane" wan't behaving appropriately, and that it wasn't Madeline's fault. I also made sure I gave her permission to walk away and stand up for herself. In our case, it was passive aggressive behavior, which is a doosey to explain to an 8 yr old.

In your case, it's much simpler. Jane's being mean/rude/ill-mannered? I'd use that as a teaching moment for June. Maybe ask her how she felt about Jane's behavior today. Plus, tell it's OK to walk away, or come get you when she acts up. Parents (me included) spend tons of energy teaching kids to be nice, share, and comply. Sometimes our kids listen too well! June probably thought she was being a good friend by "getting along" with the bratty kid.

edited to add that I am no parenting expert, so take my advice with a grain of salt!!!

Lisa, I just wanted to add that role playing was a huge help for us. It gives the child something concrete to understand, and a game plan for future issues. It was a "light bulb moment" for Madeline.
