Good morning, Nancy. Wow! I love your new cabinet hardware. They really change the overall look of the cabinets. You made an excellent choice. What is your desire for refinishing the cabinets? The ones you have look to be in good shape.
Thanks for the kind words about the chair - I just hope all the staples don't pop out the moment someone actually sits in it. ![]() |

Good morning, and thank you, Leo! It helps condition and clean the old dry wood and darkens any scrapes and dings. The wood just glows with warmth after a good orange oil rubbing! (that sounds kind of dirty, but I'm not sure without Joe around to point it out)

It doesn't show up clearly in pics, but all the areas around the handles and knobs where our hands are constantly in contact and which get sticky, dirty etc. have the finish starting to get really thin because of the constant washing etc. We will go with the exact same finish when we eventually do it (probably not for some time), because the kitchen is quite small and going with a darker wood would make the room seem even smaller.

I know what you mean, Nancy. Our first house had dark brown cabinets and it made the kitchen look so closed in and dreary. We painted them an eggshell color and it really improved the space - looked like we did much more than just change the cabinet color.

I was just over at my parents' yesterday - Mom's 80 and Dad's 87 - and I noticed for the first time that my mom has changed in a subtle way - almost seeming a little confused at times, repeating the same thing over and over.... I'm starting to worry about them living alone. I'm the only kid still living in the same city, but at least my sister isn't too far, in Houston. Being there always reminds me of how much stuff there will be to go through when they die. I don't know if it's part of the Depression-Era thinking, but they never throw anything away. They've lived in the same house since 1968 and it's just full of stuff. |

That's exactly why we are doing this, Lisa. Al lost a close friend a couple of months ago. His wife told me at one point...."I haven't even got time to grieve. I'm too busy trying to find important things in the middle of all this &$!*!" Now Al's co-worker/friend who is dying of cancer is in the same situation. He and his wife are desperately trying to get rid of junk and get things in order. I started this task because of those things, and Al followed suit. In the middle of one plastic bag with old statements, pay stubs etc. I found Al's Power of Attorney!!! That motivated me beyond belief. I realized how much clutter we have and how disorganized we are with important things . We've had a safety deposit box and the bank for a couple of years, and the darned thing has been empty. All the important things....wills etc., are here and there in the house. Most importantly, life never gives us a guarantee of tomorrow. The one thing I don't want is for the kids to have to go through this nightmare of junk if something happened to us both at the same time. It's going to be hard enough for them to go through our things when they are in order! We're trying to get everything as organized as possible, and I'm going to label everything so if they have to find stuff, they will know where EVERYTHING is. We've made a promise to each other that once we get things the way we want them, we are going to push each other to stay on top of things from here on.

Nancy, what you're doing is going to be so helpful to your families. My parents have always been very secretive about their stuff - they have told only my sister anything about where there papers are, or who to contact about their estate info. All I know is that their house is listed as a "joint trust" but had to find that info in the county's public records online. Weird, I know. They're not very trusting, even with their own kids. The unfortunate thing about that is that when they die, there may be a big legal mess to untangle and much of their estate could go to the attorneys who have to sort it out. But I can only guess - as I've no idea what they have planned...

Nancy and Lisa, Thanx for the conversation about putting/getting your married lives together for yourselves and the children. Both my parents had a living trust drawn up with DNR orders for the doctors and us grown kids. These documents made it easy to find all the important papers and what they wanted done after their deaths. My Mom out lived my Dad so all their belongings of value were itemized in the living trust and to who these items would go to. It spells out who the executive of the estate would be and allowed us to distribute income without paying inheritance taxes(except for the items which produced a profit as capital gains). You both have reminded me that my wife and I need to have living trusts set up to make life easier for our son when we go. All of this is great but someone still has to go through all the stuff and clothes and figure out what to do with it all. We donated all my Mom's clothes to the secondhand shop that she volunteered at and some of her furniture went to us as well as our friends!!!
Good luck.....

Leo, my husband visited an attorney last week to get a living trust set up for us. His parents already have one. It seems like an absolute must these days.

Well, it's 10:13 p.m. here and I'm about to call it a day. We both got a lot accomplished. We quit around 5:00 and spent the evening sitting on the front porch relaxing, reading, chatting, having a couple of drinks and being grateful that summer finally arrived! Al just said to me...."We have to do a big push tomorrow to get this finished off and get some sense of order back into the house!!" I agree completely! We have boxes and bags in about 5 rooms in the house. Time to wind up this task and do the fine-tuning. I think tomorrow will be the last of the 'shredding" etc., and we have a whole whack of stuff ready for Al to load into the trunk of the car and head to the dump.

Funny thing happened to me today...
I was driving from work to go pick-up Justin from Daycare. I was on a busy road, 2 lanes each direction approaching a red light. This attractive young woman was crossing the road not at the intersection. The cars in the left lane going my direction had stopped and were stacked up, so she was making her move. I stopped to let her go across. She smiled brightly and waved, very flirty. I waved back and smiled, and though I may be dreaming, I think she was smitten by me, because she was watching me and walked right into the back side of the car in the other aforementioned lane! I laughed, then said "be careful" cheerfully. She sheepishly said something, and went on her way. It was nice to be admired, or at least think that's what happened! ![]()

Mornin' all! Filling up on the caffeine here to get ready for the next round of purging junk. Al will be making a couple of trips to the dump with stuff. This evening I'm heading out for wings and beer with a girlfriend, and Al will be racing. We've got another hot and humid day and we both feel grateful to have the central air to make this job a bit more bearable!!
What's up for everyone else? Caroline! Are you home yet? Leo, what's the tire situation today? Lisa? Did you get the new chair oiled? How does it look? I miss Jimbits. Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!! |

Morning Nancy, I'm calling the bike shop today to see what they have available in tubeless tires for my bicycle as well as riding twice today. First I'll head out for coffee at Starbucks and then to the doctor's for a routine visit!!!
I agree thank God for central air conditioning.....

Hello all.
Have a big wedding to go to this Saturday and desperately trying to lose enough weight to squeeze into my suit. Also meeting Marty and Rosemary on Sunday and want to be a bit trimmer so he doesn't poke at my podgy bits with an old twig!!!!! It's getting serious...last night I was prancing around the lounge to Claire's aerobics dvd with two tshirts over my flabby belly and manboobs wrapped in clingfilm (seranwrap am I right?) Must fit in suit jacket...I must, I must, I must improve my bust! J |

Seriously I'm on a soup and grapefruit diet with loads of natural water balancing stuff to clear the pipes and I'm now walking 6 miles a day.
Luckily since the Norovirus outbreak, I've been off snackfoods and certain stuff like cheese and pasta (I'm sure you all can imagine why) so that helps. J |

The top and fringe got so long that I could put it in my mouth....when it's long it goes all nice and blonde. Claire has been nagging about me having it cut for ages and I've resisted saying I'm growing it long and teaming it up with a 70's blonde tache!!!! Poor cliare has been frantic with this posh wedding coming! ![]() Yesterday I snuck to the barbers and had it all chopped off...now the top is only just over an inch long and is in a kind of punky beckham mohawk thing!!!!! Do the lovely ladies here prefer men with longer hair or cropped hair? J |

Long hair is great for 12-16 year olds, after that I prefer it cut short. Al used to have a pony tail. The happiest day of my life was when he came home one day with it all cropped off really short! We want PICTURES!!! ![]() |
