If I didn't have my idiotbox I'd go mad!!!!!!!!

Latest fave is Deadliest Warrior.

Pure 100% Dumbassery...they get a bunch of gees to discuss the merits and weaknesses of specific warriors and the enter it into a "computer simulation" to see who is the best.

The final rendering features two bit part no-marks used to waiting tables hack clumbs of gory flesh out of each other in a non descript forest setting.

It is stupid and silly but I love it....I feel the grey matter collapsing as I type!!!!

Squier Manor

David -- I see this was a year ago or so, but thanks for posting the Squier Manor pics. I have friends that live across from the school that sits where your family's house did. I believe that the stone steps in the fourth picture were on Forest Ave., which had just been built around that time. If I'm not mistaken the steps are still there.

In case you're curious, there's a 1909 fire map showing the Squier Manor neighborhood online. It shows your family's house (the biggest one of course) along with what must have been mostly brand new houses in the just-platted lots.

Coincidentally I used to live a few blocks from the Palo Alto house during the dot com boom and I remember having jogged past it a few times. Beautiful house.

JJ Squier moved to KC in 1870. Albert and Cora were born in 1870 and 1872 respectively. Squier made a LOT of money in cattle, banking and real estate. Albert died at age 11 from Malarial fever. I have some of his letters and school papers, he was quite a brilliant little boy, and it's so sad to see a promising life that was not lived.

Cora inherited her father's estate, and moved to the Kansas City house upon the passing of her mother (1907). They lived there until 1925 or so, when they moved to Palo Alto. The story goes that they moved so her children could attend Stanford University; she was a domineering woman who wanted to keep close tabs on them, hence selling all the KC holdings. The KC house was razed and the estate was developed at that time. (Google "Squier Park Neighborhood") Upon moving to Palo Alto, she bought several parcels and rezoned the property lines so that the main house would have a bigger yard. She also owned the house next door.

My father grew up in the house next door, and in the main house, after Cora and her husband died in 1949. My grandfather inherited that house and lived there until he died in 1980. My grandmother sold it in 1982. I used to stay there a lot as a child and it was a beautiful place. It had a tennis court, orchard, formal garden with over 300 rose bushes, etc. I wish my family still owned the house, but it is now worth many million dollars because of its desirable location. My experiences with that house are the reason I like older homes, and at least I have some of the furnishings!

Thanks for listening!

Hi Rob,

Welcome to TRF, and I have to say I enjoyed reading your post. It's a small world, isn't it?

I actually believe the steps were on Troost, and they are gone now. Perhaps I'm mistaken and will look along Forest again next time I'm in KC. The main property where the house, gardens, outbuildings, etc., was boundaried by 36th, 40th, Troost and The Paseo. My great-grandfather, Robert Valentine Jones, did most of the platting and was responsible for the design of Manheim Road. 37th and 38th used to be called Cora St and Albert St., when they were first platted. Cool map!

Insofar as the Palo Alto house, one of the reasons it was sold was its proximity to East Palo Alto and the Whiskey Gulch area of University Avenue. Things were pretty sketchy over there back then. Later on, my wife's office was in the new towers when Bingham McCutchen moved in. Ironically, she's on business in Portland now!

You know what Rob, I stand corrected! Thanks to the map link you shared, I now can see how the house was oriented to the compass. Upon comparison between the photos and the map, the stairs ARE in fact adjacent to Forest! Perhaps the steps now go up to the school building?

Again, thanks!

If I had known there were some hot dudes (albeit married) in the coffeeshop I would have been over her sooner!

HI! I am new, and usually on diamond forums, but I am researching a watch for my dad. I will be posting a picture of my Rolex later, but I wanted to say "HI."

My fiance is not a name brand sort of guy, so he HATES to admit that he LOVES the stainless Rolex (NIB) that I bought him two years ago. It is the only watch he has ever worn because it doesn't pinch his arm hair. He acts modest but you can tell that he loves the compliments he gets on his watch. It is cute.

Hi

Welcome to the coffeeshop! It's been a little dead lately, but feel free to lighten up the atmosphere

What's your name? (If I may ask...)

Good luck on the research for your dad's watch! We're all here to pitch in if you need opinions!

So what are you thinking for your father, and the husbands watch........a DJ? Sub? Just curious, and thanks for waking this thread up!
