You can highlight the areas containing white text (if you suspect that white text is being used) by using your mouse (sorry if that is a bad word to use, Lisa) or by using the RolexGreen or RolexAfterdark color selection for all of your viewing pleasure.

That's because they're white with blue eyes! The rest of the features are my hubby's, I think!

Leo - I've got a few pics of the flowerbeds for you. The dianthus really took off this year - each has about tripled in size from when it was planted 2 years ago. Behind them are some geraniums - impulse buy because I liked the salmon color. There are three of them in this bed.

Remember how the hailstorm tore up the hostas and they grew back in all green? Well, they came back variegated this year, just like you thought they would. The caladiums haven't emerged yet, but there should be some coming up between hostas soon. I replanted the bulbs a few weeks ago.

Purple coral bell. It looked puny and sick all winter, but came back nicely.

Peonies getting ready to bloom. I've propped up those heavy blooms with twigs.

Hydrangea - can't wait for those huge blue blooms. I've gotten started applying the mulch to this area and have a ways to go. Bought 6 more bags of it today.

More hostas. The bare area behind them will soon be filled with a giant elephant ear. I overwintered the bulbs in the basement and they survived just fine.

More dianthus. June colored her hair to match. Behind her is the white peony, also propped up with twigs. I think those look more natural than the big metal cages.

Along the east side of the house - this is where I dug up all the (*@#$& monkey grass and put in a butterfly garden last week. There's parsley, fennel, butterfly bush, salvia, and my memory escapes me on the others. Petunias too, mostly for color. I put in moneywort for groundcover but I'm also going to add a covering of black mulch to tidy it up. That's a project for tomorrow!

Along the south side - this is where 5 of the climbing roses have been planted. I'm hoping to get them off to a good start - along with the other baby plants there. The little white ones are dusty miller and some white dianthus. It's pretty skimpy looking now.

Leah checking out the Westerland climbing rose.

A girl and her bunny. The iris plants were dug from my mom's house last week. She has tons of them that were originally planted about 40 years ago. I tried to get a bunch in every color she had; pale lavender, purple, peach and yellow.

What do you think? Did I do all right?

Thank you, Raf and Ed. Now that baby Violet is getting old enough to entertain herself some (she'll be 4 this June) I have more time to dig in the dirt. It's also too early for mosquitoes and blazing heat - this is the best time of year.

Hi folks, just chiming in with praise for Lisa's beautiful gardens (and lovely girl, and bunny). As a gardener/farmer, these are very inspiring! I love the meticulous approach you have, and also the way the brickwork makes everything look especially pretty. I find that's true at our place, too.

My perennials are just starting to show up, after the snowdrops, crocuses, and daffodils. I'm looking forward to our showy stand of Siberian iris, due soon.

Food crop wise, the garlic is looking good. That's all that's up now. Pretty soon I can get the early lettuces in.

Cheers,
J

Hey, J - thanks so much for the kind words. I'm learning as I go - but it's really been fun - and good exercise, too.

The bunny provides lots of compost, and no kidding - it has really made a difference in the health and growth of our plants!

Tell me more about what kind of gardening and farming you do. I'm guessing you're farther north, since your perennials are just starting up. Hope you'll share some pics.

My parents were avid gardeners (both farm kids during the Depression) and I grew up on home-grown veggies and fruits. We even had a chicken for fresh eggs. We'd sell cantaloupes every summer to boost our college funds. I used to hate having to get up early during summer vacation to snap green beans or shell black-eyed peas, or help Mom stuff jars or juice apples... but looking back, I realize how lucky I was.

Bunny compost? If you want compost, try panda poo.

Send it over!

Wonder if I'd get similar results by feeding bamboo to the rabbit?

Lisa, I agree on getting that compost enriched. I have a small flock of sheep, so that's what we use.

I'm a hobby farmer really, so I get to play around with animals and gardening. (Some of the acreage is in productive row crops farmed on contract.) There's a wetland we manage, and woods and a creek. I do a large vegetable garden and lots of flowers. Yep, late gardens work best here.
A few snaps from recent years. In one from late summer, you can see the lower soybean field turned golden.

Just breathtaking! Those iris are stunning. Is that lavender in the top right pic?

Your photos remind me of the farmland in NE Oklahoma, where my dad grew up. That old barn is too cool - is it yours? How many acres do you have?

What a great place to live. Now, if you tell me you live in an old farmhouse, and that there's a fishing pond, I'll fall over.

More piccies, please!?

Thank you. It's a special environment that nurtures me every day. Yes, that old barn is our property, but not much in use. We use the one and other outbuildings near the house.

The lavender looking pic is actually a perennial salvia, and in that pic there are nasturtiums and brussels sprouts (the tall things toward the back in the frame).

Yep, a very old farmhouse (1860s), with a wetland and a creek, in fact. A few more snaps for ambience. If you have the chance to come through Ohio, let me know and I'll fix us something nice to sip on the porch.

The funny guy is a snapping turtle who winds up in the yard every year on the way to the wetland.
