Hi, gals. Back from another day in the furniture stores.... looking for an entertainment center/wall unit for our telly. Why is everything today made without doors you can close to hide the TV screen when it's not being watched? I like the neat look of a closed cabinet, yet only a few pieces are made with doors anymore. We must be in the minority that we don't intend to put a huge plasma screen TV in it.... anyway, we're still looking. I'm not too experienced with buying new furniture - most everything we own is antique - so it's pretty unfamiliar territory.

Hi Lisa,

We have a solid cherry armoire (which I refuse to give up), so when hubby bought an LCD tv last week, he measured it to fit. When we bought the piece 6 years ago, I guess the flat panel craze hadn't set in. I think nowadays, the trend is to show off the tv, rather than hiding it. Considering the style and decor of your home, I think it might look out of place to have a tv on display! You know, you could probably convert an old wardrobe, if you really want to keep on track with the rest of your home.

By the way, I bought my cork floors the other day, and today I bought a brand new bedroom set! Well, actually it's all on order, so I'll still have to wait a few weeks, but I'm sooooo excited!
Now I'm thinking about the paint colors for the walls....

Here's a picture of the catalog picture of my new bedroom set, I bought all the furniture you see on it! Except for the lamps, I bought different ones...

Whoo hoo! You've been doing some serious furniture shopping! Very sleek, cool and elegant. Nice! Are the cork floors for the bedroom only?

Talk about a social butterfly! Glad you're enjoying the weekend. Ours has been busy too. Friday night we had a Robbie Burns dinner to attend. Lots of fun there, and always amusing to see Al in a kilt. Yesterday we went out to buy a DVD burner for my computer. Al gave me a super video camera for Christmas and I want to be able to burn video to CDs. Stopped by our club for a few drinks with friends and then just came home to relax and talk watches. This morning we're headed to Toronto to the annual Boat Show. Should be a fun day.

Woohoo Nancy! Is it true what they say about men in kilts??

Lisa, the cork floors are for all 3 bedrooms, and my walk-in closet. This will eliminate all the carpet in my house!
The kitchen, family room, and both bathrooms have tile, the office, living room, dining room and hallway have laminate floors. The only place I need to put tile after I'm done with this projext, is the laundry room (which has vinyl at the moment), and I also want to epoxy the garage eventually! Pff... even a brand new house is never done Lisa!

Just some general thoughts about laminate floors:

I'm assuming timber laminates here, meaning thin veneer of timber on a sandwich core made up of either compressed woodchips or some other composite material.

They tend to release ambient particles into the air, resulting from some of the bonding materials, ie. resins and epoxies. These can cause irritation and allergies over time, especially when accumulated. It would be good to check with the supplier/manufacturer as to how prevalent this is. Many of them recommend ventilation rates, ie. gallons of air per hour, which would be controlled either by how many windows you have, or your air conditioning system.

Not intending to alarm anyone, but if anyone is sensitive in your household, it might be worth checking out.

Lee, please tell us what you think about real linoleum. I've heard it is healthy, and a "green" building product, so I chose it for our kitchen. Marmoleum, produced by Armstrong, is what we used. Forbo Industries produces it, too, I think.

Lisa, natural linoleum is a good product. Armstrong may produce a variation of the product, but from memory, Marmoleum is a trademark belonging to Forbo. My dad was the AD for Forbo products in SE Asia for the longest time till about 10 years ago.

The product itself has been installed in numerous hospitals, especially operation theaters and ERs where a good non-slip yet hygienic surface is required.

In homes, you might want to test install a few small areas as natural linoleum does give off a certain smell, while not entirely unpleasant, it might take a little getting used to. If you're choosing a linoleum product, make sure the colourings they use are natural too. You can't go too wrong with the Forbo product though in my opinion. I've just specified it for an office renovation over 10 floors and the oldest installation I know of is in a museum about 12 years old now without replacement.

Go figure. We spend tons of money replacing windows and doors to make our houses airtight to reduce drafts and heating costs, and end up with cr@ppy air quality.

Al, it's like a boat. You repair something down below, say a crack in the fiberglass around the mast shoe, and then you lacquer over the patch with some fiberglass and extra epoxy, then the fumes will keep anyone sane out of the cabin. For the next 3 days you've got all hatches open and then thereafter the smell... never... seems... to... go... away...

Lee, you're absolutely right. I was confused and incorrect! Forbo's Marmoleum is what we have. And I haven't noticed a smell at all - except for the day of installation, and I think that was probably the adhesive more than anything else. It's soft, quiet, and not cold to bare feet, even in the winter. I think it has some of the desirable qualities of cork, but I don't know how cork and linoleum compare for durability and maintenance.

Thanks for setting me straight. I love the stuff, especially in our 1930s-style kitchen.
