Great pics, chicfarmer! And thanks, I'm trying to stay safe. You're welcome for the pics.

Thank you, Lion.

I've posted pics of all 3 of my Rolexes, but the one I had a couple threads about is this T-Bird.

Here's a link to the main thread about it. I also ran a couple others to be sure it was real.

Thanks for your service also! I really don't know what I'll do afterward, but then I haven't had much time to think about it lately.

Hey, Leo. Thought I'd answer your message here... good for you on your purchase of bulbs. Your place will be beautiful come spring. I may give crocuses one more try - with the little cages to keep the squirrels out of them.

I spent some time this afternoon training/tying the climbing roses to the chain link fence in the back yard (these are the five plants I ordered last spring). I used strips of soft cotton fabric. Some of the canes aren't long enough, but I was able to get a few from each plant headed in the right direction. They're blooming beautifully, and the salmon and cream colors do look nice together. I'm pleased that they survived being shipped (half bare-root and half as tiny seedlings) and planted by a rose novice, and then subjected to our hottest and driest summer in decades. They must be very tough!

Lisa, I know your yard is beautifully landscaped and it takes a lot of hard work to keep it that way. I'm glad your climbing roses despite your tough growing conditions this summer have thrived and it's a testament to your determination that they did so well. Btw how did your lawn and garden irrigation system work out this year? Remember when you plant your Crocuses to use a bulb starter fertilizer!!!

Thanks, Leo - I need to be working harder, though - it's about time to clean out the flowerbeds and get some mulch down.

The sprinkler system's great. I have to spot water a few places that just don't get enough from the system, but overall it's sure a convenient way to keep things watered.

Phooey - the bermuda grass keeps on taking over the sunny areas of the lawn, crowding out the fescue, so I've decided to let it stay and quit fighting it. The fescue does well in the shadier areas, so the two can co-exist. I don't mind the look of mixed grasses, anyhow.

Should I do anything to the roses for the winter? Do they need any special treatment, other than a good layer of mulch?

Lisa, I understand the Bermuda grass can sure take over but it is a nice turf grass to have. We also have a lot of fall cleanup to do in the flower beds and borders besides planting all the bulbs. As for your climbing roses, I'm not an expert, but I would just give them a good 6" layer of mulch for the winter. You could also check at a garden center for advise or you county extension service!!!

Hey, everyone. Today I asked 4-year-old Violet if she knew how many little "Hex Bug" toys we had because I was picking up around the house and wanted to be sure they were all accounted for. Her answer: "I'm small and I don't know crap about nothing."

Oh dear. I think her sisters are being a less than stellar influence on her. Or maybe it's her father?

My daughter-in-law is having her second girl in January. Big sister will be exactly 4 years older. I can't wait to see what Alyssa teaches the new one (assuming she lets her live that long).

One good thing that Alyssa will soon find out - her baby sister will adore her from the first moment they meet. Whether the feeling is mutual.... well...

My girls liked their new baby sister pretty well until she became mobile and started getting into their things. One good thing about that was they got much better at putting away their toys.

Mine are spaced 4 1/2 years and exactly 4 years apart (birthdays a week from each other. It's a pretty good age spread.

Hey, you DID tell me so! Nothing wrong with that.

More gray hairs? Heck, no. The Mad Housewife wine takes care of that. I don't shampoo with it, though. It must be sipped from a glass.

Okay, Leo - you will agree I've become a little meshugenah - or at least, even more than usual. I just spent an hour outside with Violet, harvesting paper-shell pecans from our huge tree in the backyard. You see, the squirrels are eating most of the ones that fall to the ground. So my method is to repeatedly hurl a basketball into the tree, more or less aimed at clusters of pecans, to knock them down. Violet scrambles and puts them in a bucket. We did pretty well this morning, I might add!

And a bit of good news - Oklahoma City's first Whole Foods market opened Wednesday. I've been twice to brave the crowds - it's fabulous and really a dream come true. When we lived in San Antonio we loved going to Whole Foods - even though we had to drive across town to get there. Now, it's about a mile from our house. Can't wait to grill some of the fresh chicken and thyme sausage and blue cheese hamburger patties that I bought today. We'll have them on rosemary garlic ciabatta rolls.

Lisa,

Not to put too fine a point on it, but "meshugenah" is the person, "meshugah" is the adverb. You may not be a meshugehah, but you have become meshugah.

But you're right, you have become a bit meshugah about the pecans.

As for Whole Foods, we have several around us, including a new one that recently opened up that has become the local meeting point. The stuff it good, but we still do most of our shopping at our local Giant (more of a mid-Atlantic chain). In Florida we like Fresh Market for the high end stuff and Publix for the basics.

Lisa, sounds like you have a good plan and with Violet assisting you're able to reap some reward from your pecan tree...

Lisa, I'm glad you have such a nice market. Everything you bought sounds mouth watering good.....and washed down with a Mike"s...

Thank you for the clarification, Ed.

Sounds like you have lots of good choices for shopping. That's one thing that was severely lacking in OKC - we had either dingy, cramped, over-priced grocery stores with poor selections, or Super Target (10 miles from my house), and that was about it. We owe the new Whole Foods entirely to Chesapeake Energy Corp, which is headquartered right across the street from the new store. Apparently Chesapeake CEO Aubry McClendon supplied the land and financing and successfully lured Whole Foods here. Rumor has it that his wife wanted the store, so he made it happen.

Having been born here but lived other places, it's really nice to see good things happening in OKC. I think in the past, stores like Whole Foods weren't convinced we were the right market for them, but if the crowds at this new store are any indication, Whole Foods made the right decision - and made a lot of people very happy.

And even finer, "meshugah" is an adjective, not an adverb. And crucially, the nonsense itself, the thing that we deal with, is: mishegoss.
---
We have Trader Joes and Whole Foods in the nearest big city, but what I really treasure is the ability to get virtually all my food locally grown, except for exotics like coffee and bananas. Of course it's seasonal, but with a freezer that means we eat local foods for a great deal of our diet. So much bettah!
