My wife gave me a 31mm DJ during the 90's, I guess it was the "IN" thing back then but I eventually gave it to my wife. I would recommend 36MM or 40MM for men.

My rules of thumb with proportion:
  • The lugs should not extend beyond the curve of your arm.
  • The band should lay flat on your arm; not straight down from the lugs.
  • The watch should fit easily under sleeves.
  • The watch should look like an accessory; not an attention grab.
Well said. I couldn't agree more.

It's entirely up to the individual.

If the watch is not prissy or frilly in any way, it's size is entirely relative.

If the watch looks good on your wrist and you are a man, then it's a man's watch.

I have a 31mm TT DJ and love it. The 36mm looks like an old man's watch on my wrist. The larger diameter watches look better with thicker faces (sub, DT, YM) unless you have a large wrist.

For the ladies ... Well a lady should always wear a ladies watch. The midsize on a lady looks tacky. If the 26mm is too small for you, than you need to shed a few pounds. I know it sounds harsh, but I get sick of seeing these ladies carry a extra baggage and sporting the midsize model. It's become synonymous as the chunky ladies rolex.

Today, everyone prefer BIG!
40mm consider okay for men now, 36mm are small.
Don't think about 31mm, later you will cry!

Too small. Many say the 36mm. is also too small, I disagree. Was perfectly fine until the invasion of the manhole covers now all over.

I don't think that 40mm is the 'standard' male size for the past 30 years?! What about many other manufacturers who produce watches smaller for men, not to mantion Rolex's own 36mm datejust, which is of a perfectly decent size for a man's wrist.

Naturally everyone comes in different shapes and sizes so a smaller watch will look fine if you have skinnier/smaller wrists.

Ultimately it all boils down to preference. 40mm is more of a 'masculine' size but I don't think it's a set man-size within the industry.

31mm in a Rolex would look small, in my opinion.

Cartier is a whole different ball-game, in terms of design and how they look on the wrist. Remember that they produce far more dressier looking watches, which are generally more elegant looking when smaller.

It does sound harsh, rude and nasty. Not the sort of tone we are interested in here.

Why do these threads so often evoke such hostility? It's just the size of a watch we're talking about.

mdb322, you're ill informed AND mean. Why would you would post such comments?

I don't know why some feel the need to say such things Lisa. But it's most certainly not welcome around here mdb322. I'd suggest you have a good hard think about it.
