Seems like the SS guys didn't read your post. As I understand it the debate is gold or TT
Right? For me and I have had all but one.
TT Daytona(great price point)
TT Sub Bluesy(classic)
TT GMT(Root Beer don't see them every day)
TT GMT(Black price about the same as SS)
Just my two cents worth. Happy hunting.

Go for what you like. I know it's stating the obvious but I wouldn't want advice from anyone on what to spend my hard earned money on. Technical things sure but you have to wear it everyday so....

Have you seen the rose gold daytona? (not the ceramic bezel one)

The only question is: "which one does smile at you, which one does touch your heart?" All the advices will be forgotten.. But you never forget what your heart tells you. (and you will not flip it in december)

If you like all gold, go for it!

The Sub is always an excellent choice for your first. Though I'd prefer the SS, only because I'm biased.

Happy Hunting!

Personally, the SS models doesn't suit me very well and also I feel as though if you want to buy a luxurious watch such as a Rolex you want to stand out of the crowd.

Waspy1, I understand your point in terms of gold (You don't want to over do it, however I only plan on wearing my Rolex watch in special occasions). I haven't seen or worn a White Gold Rolex Submariner (maybe another thing to consider). With the White Gold (WG) does it resemble much like a SS model, because if so it might not be worth the money in my opinion.
As a Civil Engineer I design the most efficient cost effective solution that functions day in and day out. Therefore, SS. Your first Rolex for special occasions - No, that's what your second or third is for. IMO if you cannot enjoy your first Rolex daily you will not realize what Rolex is all about.

In closing, with a mech/aero background the weight to functionality ratio is of concern. Therefore, the 16610 is the only way to go.

Wow! That's almost like three steps to Kevin Bacon.

Flip, what direction are you heading in after all the advice offered?

Since you mention this watch is for special occasions then acquire what ever takes your fancy. An Au Sub or GMTIIc will fit nicely.

In the future should you see yourself possibly working OS in remote areas and having to track a few time zones then consider adding a SS GMTIIc or Explorer II for every day wear.

Good luck

TT sub would be my recommendation based on your situation.
Hey Powerfunk,

The reason i don't want to wear my Rolex everyday is because I have been told that you should put on luxurious watches in moments were it captivates you or moments that seem to have a lasting appeal (Kind of a cliche but my gf thinks that it should be worn on these situations). I sort of agree, considering if you wear it regularly it might not have the lasting appeal on both yourself and anyone else who notices it.

Thanks for your reply

Hi Jimbones43,

I appreciate your concern regarding the matter. However, as I have stated I am not a watch collector nor am I an expert in these things. That is why I have ask many opinions from this forum as I know their are more people here who have collected or maybe has the exact watch that I am interested in buying and they can advise me on the pros and cons of the watch.

Congratulations on your degree. BSEE and have worked most of my entire adult life as an Engineer. Engineers make things work. We don't wear YM II as we don't need to have an adjustable timer... maybe if you cook eggs for a living. A pragmatic no nonsense watch is what works. We are not suits, so we don't wear dress watches. We are slacks, sport jackets and tie and we wear any Rolex sport watch, Submariner, Explorer, GMT, etc.

In the middle of my dilemma I came across a vintage 1680 sub in a local classified ad for a price I could not pass up so I purchased it!!! Only problem now is I want another one. Hey ada5771,

Congratulations on becoming a Mechanical Engineer. I'm glad someone can truly relate too me (I actually thought I was the only one wanting a Rolex watch after graduating).

That is one of the main problems I am having, "Buying a watch and not being satisfied after 5-7 years", because I don't think I will plan to buy a watch in the next 5-7 years as I have to start building my financial future. That is why I have ask many people here in the forum on these vexatious dilemma.

If you appreciate fine mechanical engineering I would suggest you buy a Grand Seiko Diver...

Looking down on a watch that VERY few people know how exclusive and special it is gives me a sense of inner satisfaction. Good luck either way ...
Hey buddy13,

I already have a Seiko (It's the first classic watch my parent's bought for me during HS,a Kinetic Perpetual) which i use daily for work.

Can you elaborate more on why you would not buy a Rolex for momentous occasions?

I thought it would be nice (imo) to buy something that isn't very common especially for a early 20's guy like myself to have.

Hey George Ab,

All I can say is "Preach My Brother".

I totally agree on every single comment you have made, that is why my main two preferences was the Submariner as I thought it had the most appeal and elegance compared to the others.

However, many of my friends believe it should be a complex watch as they believe "Engineering is for people who can solve anything complex, and make it more complex" lol.

But at this stage I truly seem to be leaning more towards the Submariner, however still uncertain on whether the two tone or gold and even with or without diamonds.

Hey landrowerking,

It's fine, the strap material is a personal preference in my opinion. However, because of my skin tone, I believe I need something with gold.

This is just to stand out more from the usual crowd I guess and also I think it adds a bit more elegance and class when you add a bit of gold into something.

At this stage I'm leaning towards the Submariner, but still undecided on whether Two Toned or Gold (was hoping for someone in the forum who owns both or one of them to give me information on both pros and cons of owning that particular Rolex).

Hey Turbo,

Thanks for the advice, I have seen a nice Gold GMTIIc here in our retail store.

However, comparing both the Gold GMT or Gold Submariner, their is a bit more of a price margin between the two (I don't know why to be honest, to me they both look nearly/exactly the same).

Everybody knows that 'Rolex is the best watch in the world'. I prefer wearing one of the best watches in the world without anyone (or almost) knowing what it is. That is exactly what a Grand Seiko is...

That is why brands like IWC, GS and Blancpain are better in marking personal special occasions IMHO....

Trust me a Rolex is VERY common. In all honesty 90% of buyers who spend 5000 USD+ on a watch, at least where I live, buy a Rolex...

I'm an aero engineer as well - In my experience, engineers tend to be pretty down to earth, practical types of guys.

So:
Sub - Good
Daytona - Not so good
YM2 - Massive error of judgment

Even wearing a sub would be pushing it as a junior in an engineering firm in my experience. Either of the others, you're likely to be thought of as a bit of a prat. Might not be the image to portray when starting out...

Edit: Just noted you're an Australian as well. Take what I said about engineers being down to earth, multiply it by about 100. Would really recommend against a workplace Rolex if I were you.

The GMT Master II looks good in coke, pepsi or black dial..,: In addition, the sub clasp is large for someone who sits at a desk all day, though that's just my opinion. The GMT clasp is much more comfortable for desk work...

Hey bmwwilliams,

I think I understand where you're coming from in this situation. However, I do not plan to wear it everyday to work (for the purpose of me being a graduate/junior engineer,). It's more for special occasions that I will be wearing the watch.

Btw, why would you try and astray someone from buying a Rolex, especially here in Australia? Buying an expensive watch doesn't change someones personality whether they are down to earth or not.

Don't you believe in the hard work principle - work hard in your life and reap the benefits? I'm sure even as an Aero engineer (nor sure whether you are Aeronautical or Aerospace), you would have rewarded yourself when you graduated(I know I am not the only one who has done this) and I plan to do so by buying a Rolex watch.

Absolute no brainer = milgauss (GV preferably).

Wearing gold when your a junior is like a 16 year old driving a Ferrari.
