Allan,
Sorry to hear about your uncle. It's all about moderation. I probably suck in more pollution riding 3K miles a year on my bike than the 3 cigars I smoke in a year.

Allan,
Your uncle probably enjoyed the hell out of his pipe. Although he paid a steep price for that enjoyment it makes me think everytime I visitg my 92 year old aunt at the assisted living home. She says it's no way to live and many there are just waiting to die. Not sure what works best but there is an argument that one should live their life to the fullest because quality trumps quantity everytime. Just MHO.

Ever try Holt's cigar's? IMO, they have a better selection and prices then JR's. If you sign up for their email list, they send you an email special every week. Usually it's a bundle special. I like a good cigar every now and then. Mostly when I'm sitting on my Cub Cadet and cutting the grass

I quit 31 years ago and have never missed it. I am thrilled that Al (Alcan) is going to try to quit and I will be as supportive as I can. I admire his courage, and I hope for both our sakes that he can do it. I know that second hand smoke is even more deadly, and my family history is riddled with cancer as it is.

I agree. You can rationalize all you'd like, but there is a risk every single time you place a cigarette, cigar or pipe in your mouth. Yes, it may be relaxing, you may not inhale, and certain types of smoking are LESS risky than others, but they ALL have inherit risks and none are "safe".

Therefore, I have opted to not smoke. Period.

Quit on Christmas day, 2000, after 3 packs a day. Never think about them anymore. Don't do pipes or cigars because, I figure, I'd start with cigarettes again. Addicted to stupidity now, or so says the wife.

I got caught up in cigars about 1-1/2 years ago and absolutely love them. Thankfully I accumulate more than I smoke (good for aging) because of the cold weather combined with the lack of public places to smoke. I manage to squeeze one cigar per week in and it's always a special Cuban. My favourite brands are Cuaba, Trinidad and Vegas Robaina but I also have RyJ and Partagas in my humidor.

When on vacation I'll smoke one cigar a day but I suspect when we visit Cuba shortly I'll be more likely squeezing in 2 per day. I find smoking a good cigar to be very relaxing and the flavours complex and enjoyable.

Here I am smoking a Cuaba Salomone in Sorrento this past summer

Never smoked. Grew up in a household with 2 parents that did....Probably shaved years off my life and I couldn't do anything about it. Chicago is smoke free now in all public places.
