I wear my Rolex while I watch the landscapers do my lawn... that has to count towards something.

Seriously though, for me, one of the joys of owning nice things is using them with confidence. When I was younger and not nearly as well off, nice things were bought and babied and hardly ever enjoyed because I could ill afford to replace them. I was so worried about what might happen to them, it was not pleasant to use them.

Now, I am not one for being frivolous with money or property, but I only TRULY learned to enjoy nice, quality things by using them to the fullest for the purpose they were built to do.

Seeing the robust and beautiful design of something in daily use is part of the pleasure of owning quality. Wear and tear are part of the character of an item. It is what ties an item to one's own personal history.

Wear it, enjoy it, it is not going to be harmed by mowing, washing the car, showering, swimming, drinking, having sex, playing softball, arm wrestling, catfish noodling, etc etc. etc.

I love this post and subsequent threads...

This thread was very entertaining. At first I felt bad for the OP, and was pleasantly surprised for the support that was thrown his way.

I think that there have been so many frivolous "Can I wear my Rolex while..." threads that some people don't consider the actual question and provide a knee-jerk response that fails to take each post on its own merits.

I think that he OPs question was quite legitimate. How much vibration is too much.

Of course, there were those who pointed out that it's not really necessary to wear a watch while mowing the lawn and if one needs a watch while mowing the lawn, almost any quartz watch will do.

We were all newbies once and I'm still one myself, so I think we should have the wherewithal to take the time to distinguish between obviously tongue-in-cheek threads and those that are in earnest.

To the OP, buy a digital Casio G-Shock for mowing the lawn, even though Rolex makes some of the most robust watches in the luxury field.

The cost of some peace of mind is not very high.

By the way, I consider my Rolex watches to be my beaters and I pamper my lesser watches much more than the Rolexes.

However, there are times when I'm working with certain solvents that I'll put my Rolex in a pocket until that job is done.

There's no shame in being cautious.

I have a 27 y/o lawn mower and a 22 y/o lawn mower. Strangely my wife gave birth to them both. Actually living on a beach, mowing the yard isn't a big project.

OK, I'll be direct: Yes you can mow the lawn, problem free, with a Rolex. However, why do that? You will need to clean it after.

I do have landscapers who handle those things, but that's beside the point. When I do similar, rough work, I simply take off the Rolex and put on a Timex, as logic would dictate.

Can you? Yes.

Should you? No .

I honestly hope this helps.....

One of the reasons that I own a pair of Rolexes is that they are tough enough to take anything you throw at them.

So yes, I mow the lawn wearing them, I also shoot clay pigeon and swings a golf club whilst wearing them and they both seem and look ok to me.

I agree we seem to be getting an abundance of threads asking for a pic of your Rolex whilst on the beach etc and for me that is fine, however I just hope no one comes up with a thread along the lines of "show us your Rolex whilst sitting on the toilet".

Regards

Mick

I have a large property and mow 2 acres of it with a Kubota Combi tractor. One could say I might be a gentlemen farmer. I prefer redneck. I wear my Rolex often when mowing. In fact, I have worn all my divers when mowing, shooting, even running a chainsaw. No problems, no additional scratches and accuracy is still under 2 seconds a day with all of them.

Well, damn the luck. My "people" were a no show today (again) so I had to mow the grass myself. Wore my 216570 in the process and all is well. Wow....hope no one saw me. Neighbors will think I've fallen on hard times.

I will wear my AK while cutting the grass with no worries. If it ever stops raining here I may just do that today.

I can't see why this question isn't as topical and pertinent as any other I've seen here, and considerably more so than many threads we see like "Show your Rolex with your favorite shoes." It's a practical question and IMO a good one.

I've worn my GMT 1675 for the past 43 years since new and until recently have not used much scrutiny about when and where I should remove it. In the past I almost never removed it for any reason except while water skiing, and then only because I feared a hard fall might cause the band to break or come lose and the watch would be lost. I chopped wood, hammered nails, did yard work, and worked on my cars, motorcycles, and lawn equipment--and usually only removed the watch when it posed a problem fitting my hands in tight areas. It's a wonder the watch looks as good cosmetically as it does today.

In the past few years I've used more caution and now remove it when doing things that might cause cosmetic damage, like yard work and vehicle maintenance. But I've logged >200k miles on various Harley-Davidsons over the past 20 years and have never removed it while riding. The watch seems unfazed by this exposure, and if it can survive years of riding year-round on a Harley it can survive a lawn tractor for an hour every week in the summer months.
