I always thought the DD or DJ looked better with a suit--gold, TT, or stainless, does not matter. The GMT was designed to wear with a pilot's uniform that looks like a business suit, so OK also. Gold sub is awesome, however.

try it on with a suit and see how you feel is the only real way to find out.

Nothing wrong with wearing gold sports watch with suit. A business suit is not considered formal wear. But even with formal wear might be ok is the person was discreet.

Gold is always fine with a suit

My watch and I are the same age. I'm too old to be a pimp.

I think a day date looks fine regardless of attire but I think a sub, gmt, Daytona may look a little pimpish haha

Big fan of the show as well, IIRC there was a scene in the first season where one of the brokers talked about his watch. He said something regarding the fact that there is 10K of gold in his YG Daytona but the rest 20K was for the Rolex brand.

This is exactly why the 36mm DD is so classic.

I sport mixed breeding, have been called a jerk (and worse) and wear a gold sub when I am feeling particularly tasteless. With a suit.

For the serious part of the question; I wear what I feel like wearing, on whichever occasion I wish. I am a watch enthusiast, it's my thing. It's about how you feel, you will not look silly. My only concession is when wearing a dinner suit/tux. I don't wear a watch in one.

I'm very biased...just bought this a few days ago!

fr_82.jpg

Here is a gold DDII worn with casual attire in a manner that I don't consider tasteless.

brad rolex oyster.jpg

Heavily accessorized with other gold jewellery and diamonds...yes...pimp.
A pair of leopard print shoes and a walking stick...yes..pimp.
A well tailored business suit or well put together casual attire on a classy individual....

And this applies to any gold watch...sport or not!....IMO

Now plenty of us wear gold Rolex in business suits and look perfectly fine. What is the scope of use? Personal preference as there is no scope of use other than telling time for most.
Like Jean Alesi at Montreal GP this weekend?

Overall i think you should refrain from this.

A dress watch should be on a strap and worn above the wristbone. So, nobody should see it anyway. Problem solved.

Wearing a suit and attire for a formal situation as in black tie event two completely different scenarios. If one couldn't wear a gold Sub, DD/DDII, GMT etc with a suit than many of us who wear suits to work daily would never wear a precious metal Rolex let alone a SS one. Then I would imagine Rolex would sell far fewer watches as their market would shrink by a large margin.

It depends on the situation, it depends on the suit. But in general the watch should complement the suit and not the other way around. A gold submariner will be screaming its way out of your suit. Better choose a classy understated 36mm leather band watch that is barely visible, like someone else wrote above.

This is no hard rule of course, but as the gentleman from the UK stated earlier, wear sport shoes under your suit if you wish, but this is my answer to the OP's question!

Wearing sports shoes with a suit vs wearing a sports watch with a suit two entirely different things. If one was to only wear a dress watch with suit then Rolex would only sell Cellini's to us white collar workers. Then main market for sports watch would be blue collar workers. My guess is based on that proposition Rolex sales would drop by 75%! Again wearing a sports watch with a tux quite different than suit and certainly not on same level as wearing sport shoes with a suit. Yes this holds true for SS sports watch as well as PM ones. By the way nothing wrong with blue collar or white collar work or whatever you do. Only thing wrong to me is blanket generalizations that make little to no sense.

And yes I think I have a good sense of style at least I think I do: Patek watch and cufflinks, Hermes tie, Ferragamo shoes, Canali suit, and Holland & Sherry custom shirt.

And I wear plenty of sports watches with suits too...Just saying.

Very classy combination HL65!
In my honest opinion a gold Sub would only diminish that look on your picture, that's all I'm saying. Maybe the comparison with sport shoes and a suit is a bit extreme, but there is no better way of describing it. A sport watch is a sport watch!

That doesn't mean that a sport watch could not work well under a sportier suit...

Thanks for compliment....But if Rolex only sold sports watches to those who did not wear suits to work like me they would not be the same company and their sales would fall by 3/4's IMHO. Most people don't buy sports watches to wear only on weekends they buy for daily wear. Most people buying very expensive watches do in fact wear suits to work each day. Again not putting down those who don't just stating facts. Last time I will say this: There is a huge difference between wearing a sports watch and suit and wearing sports watch to a formal black tie event. In the latter case I would certainly wear a dress watch and the only dress watch Rolex makes is Cellini and no I wouldn't wear one of those and yes Patek!
