IG is great just for the pics but there's only so much you can tell about a person from a two line blurb about a pic.

Hey, I could talk about the Special Olympic races this upcoming weekend but, does it fit after the "I sold my Corvette because the Valet at the restaurant didn't park me in the front row! So I got a R8. It is the greatest car ever! And, by extension, I am the greatest ever! Even though that's what I just said about the Corvette a month ago."

Meh, the people who matter know what I'm up to.

I don't have any of those too. For some reason I believe it would bring me more problems than joy.

I have a limit for my posts, which is to only post something below $30,000 in value.

It's super easy to unfollow on IG, just click under their profile pic and all your frustrations go away.

Instagram is just cheap entertainment. Nothing more.
Enjoy it or don't.

How do you know they don't already give $300k or $30M to charitable organizations? What bothers me to no end is when people start questioning what others do with their money. They buy a $MM apt in NYC and people say that nobody should spend that kind of money on an apartment and should have given that money away.

Most people have a a sense of some civic responsibility and do what they believe to be the right thing. How much the give and how much they do is entirely up to them.

There is no way to know. That wasn't the point of this thread.

matt,

kudos for openly sharing your thoughts.

i think the main takeaway is everyone should try to be charitable (many are) if they can within reason and within their means. one can donate time, mentoring and cash but i have a problem with cash as about 70% - 80% of every dollar goes to admin and not those directly in need. charity that's closest to home is best imo. you can see it helping at food banks, shelters and the local SPCA or palliative care society.

the second is people need motivators (even rich). some work their ass off for food, others for toys. its actually healthy and the visuals do tell a story but there's always more to it than the image. maybe they already donate, maybe not but nobody knows.

My thoughts exactly. Im am not trying to sound like a hater or anything of the sort. People can spend money on what ever the hell they want that is simply there business. Some of the post that I would see on IG I personally would never be able to spoil myself to that extent. Regardless of how much money I made or donated. Sure, all of the IG accounts that bothered me a little bit I just unfollowed and that was the end of it. I guess there is a point ( for me personally) when I believe it gets to be a little bit too much. That even if you can afford it, and give billions to charity's, it seems almost wrong to spoil ones self to a certain extent. Now by that extent I mean a absurd absurd insane amounts of money on material things. My 2 cents, not trying to offend anyone.

Here is the deal about giving:

But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving will be in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

If that wasn't the point, than what was... Wanting to see someone post pics of them writing a check to charity? Giving is enabling and humbling but anyone that posts pics of that is doing it for their own gain, and nobody elses.

You're absolutely right, there is no way to know which was my point. Whether they give zero to $1MM, live and let live. Instagram, by design, is for people looking to show off what they are or what they have.

Sadly, it seems that many of these 'acts of kindness' on social media are strictly self-aggrandizing.

When it comes to charity the end justifies the means.

I love seeing those pics

Nice cars, planes, boats, watches . . .

And if those people 'made it in life' great for them

If they wanna show off . . . great for them

As long as we are all happy ;)

It's true. The needy recipient receives the help they need regardless of the intentions of the giver.

Dang. I'm gonna need a little time to process this.
