Everyone has something. Whether it be watches, cars, mountain bikes, shoes, etc. The same person who may think I am insane for buying a $7300 watch may own two $5000 mountain bikes. So, at the end of the day, you must ask yourself if it is what you want and does it make you happy. I don't have to justify my expenditures to anybody..................................except for the wife.

It's always interesting what people spend their money on. I've had alot of expensive hobbies over the years. Magic, saltwater fish tank, motorcycles, computers just to name a few. But out of all my hobbies, collecting watches is the only one that can be enjoyed almost 24/7. All you have to do is look down at your wrist to enjoy it. Many hobbies are only enjoyable for a few minutes a day or a couple hours on a weekend.

Showing my ignorance
Before signing on and learning here, thanks TRF, I thought Rolex was the most expensive standard watch. However IMO I feel they are the best when taken into account, history, feel, ability to wear anywhere, quality, robust movement.
I could be wrong in most peoples eyes but to me rolex is the pinical, and is my Grail. I hope and look forward to replacing the one I had to sell 2 years ago. |

One reason for the incorrect information many people have is the merchandising of cheap Invictas on TV. A Sub Date look -a -like going for $79.00 influences how people evaluate the real thing. If an Invicta that looks like a Rolex goes for $79.00, then a real Rolex must be worth ten times as much, or $790.00. Tell them it's actually 100 times as much and they'll think you're crazy.

Non-WIS: Rolex = Movado
Most people I know lowball the guess as well. The thought of paying over $1500-2000 is inconceivable to most people (non-WIS). These same people think that the Movado they saw in the Macy's showcase is in the same category as a Rolex. Not that there's anything *wrong* with a Movado...

The only redeeming thing for me with watches, and Rolexes in particular, is that they hold their value unlike a sports car or even stocks in some markets. |

I have friends who comment that it is ridiculous to buy a Rolex, but they have all sorts of native art (rings, pendants, etc.) & new Seiko's all the time because they wear out, get scratched up, etc. I don't have any rings or jewlery of any kind, just a few nice watches. I would say that they have spent far more than I have, but I really don't care either way. It just seems that sometimes people really need to be opinionated to try & justify what they are doing, & what they are spending their $ on.

Got my Sub as an anniversary present a couple of years ago and when I first wore it to work one of the women in my office said "That's a beautiful watch, aren't they like a thousand dollars?". I saw no need to make a point of "correcting" her so I just said that was pretty close.

A million billion $...
I thought my grandmother's TT DJ should cost around US$ 15k when I was younger. I also thought sport models were also more than US$ 5k, even in the US. Then I gradually learned enough about fine watches to know how much some cost, especially RLXS. BTW, an SS Sub in Brazil costs around US$ 8k. That's why I asked for a pre-loved one for my 1st Rolex, as a gift from my grandparents. |
