Congrats
Hello Aquanuts
Congrats on your hard earned degree. I know how you feel, my son is also graduating from Med School next week. He received a SS Daytona from me when he graduated from undergrad school. Not sure what he is getting now, but not a watch this time around. The bottom line: No one on this forum can tell you what to buy, I would suggest you go to a couple of AD's, try on a few Rolex watches, and pick the one that puts the biggest smile on your face and the one that smiles back at you. Good luck. |

I have a gmt2c LN and its my most comfy sports watch. Sits great on the wrist. Also, I see a lot of Subs out in the wild but have yet to see another GMT, so maybe it's slightly more unique? You can't go wrong with the GMT.

I won't bore you with the watch I think you should get. You've obviously made some well thought out decisions in your life so far and this will just be another one, although relatively minor, compared to the rest.
Congratulations on a wonderful achievement. |

Wel,l what about a speedmaster, new or vintage, with a pulsometer bezel? (can you get this bezel on a new one??) These are rather rare, tend to be less expensive, and it is a useful feature in your profession. (although you probably wouldn't actually use it to check someone's pulse).
Plus it would fly under the radar as Speedy's do, but any watch person would have respect for your choice- great conversation starter. A 321 movement vintage seamaster would be even cooler, and available with a gold case if that's your thing. Even with that, I think you could stay under budget. Just my two cents... |

I think a DJ TOG would be a choice for a respectable medical professional. Just my 2¢...

Congrats!
As others have said, try as many on as you can before you decide. I'd also suggest you spend some time looking in the for sale section looking at prices and pictures. Don't forgo the sub but some other suggestions are: GMT, Yachtmaster, Datejust II 116300, Hulk, SD4k, Daytona, Explorer 39 |

Great accomplishment and adding a crown to commemorate this is a very nice choice. As for which one to choose, I'd go to a huge dealer and try on as much as you want. Personally I would look at a Milgauss as its a bit rare and adds some shielding against magnetization from various sources. A bit more simple and under the radar is the Explorer 1, both obviously don't have a date, which is nice to have in your field. Therefor I would take a good look at a DJ, maybe you'll love a classic 36mm, maybe your folks spring for DD, it I would strech it, maybe that's a nice goal for further down the road. I personally feel that tool watches are a bit over the top with a white lab coat, but if you have the wrist and are in an environment that support them, like hands on in the ER then the GMTc and SDc are on the top of my list. Comfortable for everyday, nearly indestructible and accurate, all while looking great. A Daytona might a great complication that you can actually use but you loose the date...nice conundrums

Actually this is very good advice...no fun but very good advice. However, it is advice I was never able to follow when the watches started calling. I always kind of think what if there is not "lots of time".

Congrats on a great achievement! Been there done that, would hate to do it all over again...
Like people have said, just about any Rolex would be appropriate, but I lean towards the GMT II BLNR or the Explorer II 216570 which don't look as strange to me as the fat lugged Sub-c does, and not everyone on the street is wearing one of these. And I too prefer to have a date on my watch. As a pediatrician I wore my grandfather's early 1970's Stainless Oyster Perpetual with Date, from my second year of Med School in 1987 until after I had to retire for health reasons, when it was stolen in 2011. I would have much rather had to buy my own Rolex and have my grandfather still around to wear his though. If you are considering the Rolex Milgauss to avoid potential issues when working around patients in or near an MRI machine, I would also seriously consider the Omega Aqua Terra Master Co-Axial which can withstand the effects from a 15,000 Gauss MRI machine. I just bought my own AT Master Co-Ax this past Friday, and it's averaging +1.1 second a day on the wrist for the past 2 days. I have not yet read one report of a Master Co-Axial gaining more than 1-2 seconds a day on the wrist. It's elegant and sophisticated looking with good lines, understated and not ostentatious, and it's not yet seen on every jerk's wrist that you come across. Mine is the best one, in blue.

Rolex's of the recent have become QC slipping, quantity over quality timepieces. But get what you like, the GMT blue/black is a fine looking timepiece! when I graduated med school....new models were too cliche for me. :) Quote:
I leave my watches in the control room ( I am a neuro resident working on developing protocols using MRI arterial spin labeling to determine perfusion defects) So, the 1.5T rating on the aqua terra is kinda irrelevant, since noone is going to get close enough to the static B field of the MRI with any kind of metal on them....or shouldn't. If you're cose enough to have issues magnitizing your watch near the MRI, you're going to have a bigger problem, which is your watch stuck to the bore of the magnet. |

No one seems to get my point. I'm simply pointing out that both watches are well over priced for the reason of being a luxury item. One is more associated with luxury than the other, i'm only saying i'd rather be overcharged for mercedes than a toyota even if the specifications were to be similar and prices were similar. Simply put, if you have a a toyota for sale for 70000 dollars and a mercedes for 70000, they have roughly the same performance, i'd go for the mercedes any day of the week.

I think you should consider the Daytona SS...probably a wait for one but worth it as a medical school graduation gift--sporty, elegant, and prestigious...congrats doc!
Also, IWC Portugese is nice, simple, and sporty... |
