I'm sure they have some ridiculous metric used to make that kind of statement, but it definitely does not take a year to make every Rolex.

If Patek or Lange can make a few super complications in a year, Rolex mass production can make more than a single Submariner in the same amount of time.

That having a Rolex is equivalent to having cash saved. That they are an excellent investment. That they can be used in getting across borders to bribe the border guards.

They're simply saying that from starting to build the first part to finishing the final assembly takes a full year. Now multiply that by 800,000 - 1,000,00 a year...

Working in the insurance industry, I come across a fair number of people who own Rolexes. I'd say easily 90% of them have not got the first idea about the watch they own. (This is not restricted to Rolex wearers). Most cannot tell you the model they own; some say "it's just a gents Rolex" or "it's a Rolex Oyster".

I'd say 50% of them give poor estimates of the value of their watches which is quite frightening considering the cost to them.

When I started to learn about watches (thanks in part to the people I speak of) I came to realise that most owners have made their purchase because they have too much money to burn! I found it quite surprising how few forums there are for watches of this type compared to the number of owners out there.
Oh I've found this to be so true. Just the other day I was talking to a guy who didn't know that he had a Sub. Then he thought my GMT was a fake Rolex because it didn't look like his. Lol

That there were a small number of Models (maybe 4) and variations within Models (maybe gold and silver) and they all cost $20,000.

Chaps

The most common myth is - that Rolex owners, are educated, intelligent and successful.

However why is it that every day someone uses the term "Explorer 1", "Sub No date" and "Steve McQueen Explorer". We have been told a dozen times that these terms are incorrect and yet they are used time after time.

Also if they are intelligent why do they ask if they can wear a Sub in the swimming pool when it says 300m on the dial. Yes chaps it is ok to wear it in the shower as well. You can even wash your hands wearing it under running water, you really can. This is one of the reasons why Rolex are expensive, they have been constructed to keep the water out.

Finally is it safe to wear a watch walking down the street - Chaps if you are that worried, you can look cool by nonchantly putting your hand in your pocket and noone will even see your Rolex.

Regards

Mick

That people come to this forum to discuss Rolex watches, not nicknames, price increases, where can I wear it, who will notice it or how to violate customs laws threads.

(MYTH)) Rolex are the most accurate watches in the world.) Truth most cheap quartz watch will be more accurate.

(MYTH) You will damage the stem threads by manually winding by the winding crown.)Truth there are millions of manual wind watches with screw down crown that get wound daily for decades. And today most crown related problems are down to the winding crown not used enough.

(MYTH)The more jewels in a watch movement, the better the movement.) Truth a standard watch movement requires around 17 or 18 jewels at most but more than that doesn't mean it is better.Simply because watches with identical performance may contain a different number of jewels. The jewels themselves are synthetic Sapphire Ruby and are not valuable in anyway except to aid a timepiece's movement.

(MYTH) Many watch manufacturers don't tolerate the grey market.) Truth today many could not survive without it ask your self why simply because all manufacturers need to move their product. Many of these companies make hundreds of thousands of units a year and its well understood that they can only all be sold if a grey market thrives.

That all you pay for is the name...

Certainly not unique to Rolex.

I bought a ten year old BMW 2002 in college... through working on and driving that learned about what well built machines they are and still drive one. You get a lot of "oh you're only paying for that blue and white badge" comments.

Similarly I find you get a lot of "They're not worth the money, you only pay for the name" or "All Rolex watches are horribly inaccurate and basically worn as jewelry not for time keeping" or "You have to get them constantly repaired" comments from those who have no real knowledge or understanding of the history, engineering and craftsmanship that go in to a Rolex watch.

This is one of the silliest ones, and technically neither true nor untrue. It's a matter of perspective, or the story you want to spin.

When Henry ford wanted to show how efficient his new production line was he claimed he could make a new car every 3 minutes. Also silly, but not technically incorrect as that was the pace they came off the assembly line. However this isn't a true representation of the time it takes to cast engine blocks, mill gears, vulcanise tires, etc.

Rolex wants to look more exclusive and show great attention to detail, so they claim a year. That's probably a fair number if you completed each stage individually (and only once).

In reality all of the processes are run concurrently on a massive scale, and Rolex are just assembling watches from large parts bins (just like Henry Ford was). I think a day per watch is still probably stretching it.
