My sentiment as well. I also agree with others in this thread who state that most people rarely if ever put as much thought or notice into our watches as we do. Ultimately, nothing to spend energy on worrying about. Still an interesting read, thanks for sharing! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Thanks for sharing, interesting longread. It's entirely personal for me as well, although occasionally I do feel uncomfortable wearing my Rolex.
Long story short: I'm in the services industry and sometimes I have to work for clients who are barely able to make a living or are receiving government benefits. Wearing a Rolex and charging more per hour than they will make in a day makes me feel very uncomfortable working for those particular clients. I'll just take it off and put in my pocket before I meet them. This only happens a few times per month. Apart from this particular example, I don't care what people think about me or my watch. |

I was watching the X Factor the other day and noticed one of the desperate hopefuls was wearing a Sub. Quite a brave move considering all the contestants always harp on about how poor they are with their dead end jobs and ofc about their now mandatory recently deceased Grandmother. Not playing the sob story card was cool, he has my vote.

I love this!!! My father-in-law tells me about a trip to Switzerland he took with his wife years ago. He was going to buy each of his 3 kids a Rolex. Turns out (at the time) they were $3k each. Guessing he was looking at DateJusts. He said that was too much...so they bought Bucherons instead. He said you can always tell a Rolex. That have a bubble on the glass...I said oh really? I was wearing my Pepsi at the time. |

Then I saw post #60. Good on the author for showing up here on TRF....and what he had to say is fair enough in my book. (By the way, I'm guessing we were part of his research for the article. Who said there's no such thing as a good extremist?!)

Just like the clothes I wear, the way I style my hair, the shoes on my feet and my decision of McDonalds or Maestro's... I don't care what people think of me. I care what I think of me.
Oh, and good article! Picasso and Castro...Never realized! Turns out I was born 60 years after Castro on the dot. Always thought that was interesting. |

I've only recently become a WIS, so my impression of Rolex is different now to when I was younger. Pre-WIS, my impression of Rolex was the stereotypical view that the article alludes to. This was the result of ignorance and lack of appreciation on my part of the engineering, workmanship and history behind the brand and its watches. Pre-WIS, I didn't take much notice of the watches people wore in any event.
Now as a WIS, I do check to see if there are other people out there who wear Rolexes, but only to see what model they are wearing and whether it is new or vintage. I like to see other Rolexes out there in the wild and, if I do see them, I am always curious as to whether they are a WIS or not, so I can strike up a conversation about PCL, maxi dials, crystals, clasps, etc. As to what other people think, I haven't really noticed anybody taking notice (apart from receiving one compliment). |

OMG, I think I am becoming a WIS. I also noticed this watching the X-factor. A year ago I wouldn't have given his watch a second look. What will my friends say, watching the X-factor and becoming a WIS |

They shouldn't have any problem with the WIS part of it.

I consider articles of this nature to be detrimental, as they reinforce the stereotype of the ignorant and shallow Rolex owner while failing to contribute anything of substance. |

I have no problem with what the man said, just the low standard of jouralism that he employed to try to convey his message. It was the level one would expect from a school boy in the lower grades. If any student in higher education had submitted such a pile of drivel, they would have been told to try harder and resubmit it. It was more a comment on the standard of prose rather than on the message he was trying to convey. It was just plain sloppy. Regards Mick |

Wearing a Rolex just means you had a few thousand dollars in cash or in credit (or a few hundred dollars way back when) and you decided to buy a watch or someone else did and chose to gift it to you. Beyond that, it means little else.

Those who know me well know how hard I work for what I have. Yes, they think I spent too much on a watch, but don't give me any grief because I work hard for every penny. Those that don't know me just see the watch and automatically think I'm a materialistic douche nozzle.
