I believe someone eluded to a patent pending for this here on TRF at one point. |

The 40mm is what the 41mm should have been all along.
I'm more inclined toward the 36mm models, but of course, they don't have the new movement.

The oyster case has never been nor will it ever IMHO a dress watch. The DD2 is a sports/casual and gets my vote. I still have my DD2 ice blue and it won't be going anywhere. That said the new movement is a plus albeit negated by the lack of dial options.

Both DD2 and DD40 look good to me. The DD40 introduces some improvements in the bracelet build and movement, but I liked the execution of roman numerals better in the DD2.
Bear in mind the while we spend considerable time pondering minute differences in proportioning these may fly over the head of the average customer. Some say the real reason Rolex went for a smaller case in the improved "large" DD is the negative feedback on weight and fit of the DD2 from the asian market. Consequently sales have been below expectations. I have no facts to back this up, but it sounds reasonable enough to me to warrant the introduction of the DD40. |

With my small wrists I'd opt for the classic DD-36 or possibly the DD-40, which I have not yet tried on, but I would not choose the DD II. I strongly prefer the proportions and size of the DD-40 over the DD II.

I have worn a 36 for 5 years and want the 40!
If I didn't have 40mm other professional models alternate I prob would swapped long ago for a 41 or 40 |

I wore a Day Date II for several years. I thought the proportions were fine for a sport version of the Day Date. When the Day Date 40 came out, I didn't see the point when I first saw one in person. It seemed a bit smaller to my eye than the Day Date II, but I also thought the larger markers on the dial created an illusion that the bezel and case were much smaller than they were in fact. Later I saw another one that in a display case and it looked a only a touch bigger than the 36 model. Then I saw another display case where the 41 and 40 side-by-side looked totally different. It was difficult for me to decide what I really thought. When I first tried a Day Date 40 on, however, I immediately noticed it wore much smaller than my Day Date II. The watch I tried on didn't impress me too much. Truthfully, the dial was not my favorite (though now that I've seen it in better light, I realize that dial is quite beautiful). Nonetheless, I couldn't deny the move by Rolex was significant and I thought I should give the new model a chance. I went back and forth in my mind on whether the more streamlined case and bezel were improvements that would justify a change for me. In the end, especially after I tried on the model I bought, I simply decided I like the Day Date 40 more; that it just sits better on my arm, and that the more streamlined design was an improvement, at least to my eyes. The added benefits of the other improvements in the movement and bracelet sealed the deal for me. I didn't love the Day Date II any less. I just loved the Day Date 40 more.

I think the 40 is a real winner, but I can also see why some folks have an attraction to the '2' model - they're both great in their own way :)

Some really nice pictures of DD2 here!
Personally I much prefer the proportions of the new DD40. I didn't pull the trigger on a DD until the DD40 comes out as previously the 36mm is too small while the DD2 looks kind of off. |

The 40 takes care of the "bloat" of the DD2 but in my mind the 40 is still a sports watch. If you want an elegant dress watch the 36 is the way to go.
