I guess I'm an odd duck. I'd prefer the zenith version above anything recent, but I'm picky about condition - the current model is my sweet spot from a looks/cost/availability perspective. The new ceramic would be a better every day watch, but I barely wear most of my watches once a month, so every day wearability doesn't matter to me.

16 year run is one hell of a long "transition."

Although for Rolex 16 years is like a quick U-turn in front of traffic.

To me the Daytona is like the 911 - an icon, period. There are people that love the 911 but tend to think whatever is the latest is the greatest and beats all previous generations. Others respect the entire lineage and look at each generation in isolation as an icon for its time.

I think Rolex hit it out of the park with the new Daytona - seems to be exactly what people were asking for and for that reason the Daytona I expect will continue to be the icon that it is. I am glad Rolex is evolving the Daytona to keep it desirable and preserve its status. It replaces what has to be one of the longest-running iterations of the Daytona. The 16520/116520 has anchored itself in my mind as "the" Daytona as it was the Daytona I came across as a boy and wanted after so many years, sort of like the 993 911. To me they are classics, but YMMV.

I'm wit you Fred. I take nothing away from 116520 and the new Daytona-C....both are beautiful watches. BUT I prefer my 16520 Zenith Daytona...it is mighty fine and suits my taste and style perfectly.....this one stays with me.

this

the 116520 was THE real OG rolex daytona w the 4130 movement....their can only be ONE original....

the ceramics are nice but rolex should have made a true 40mm or 42mm...they dropped the ball in this regard.....

Love my 116520 and I think the Ceramic looks amazing, but I think the bezel looks very busy... As said before, very nice sporty look, not as dressy or classy as 116520.

A new model doesn't have to diminish the value of previous model long-term. There's probably going to be a very strong demand for the new one for many years, and there will be a short run of people dumping their 116520s in the next year, but that doesn't mean the 520 is suddenly garbage.
I've been saying the exact same thing. There will be a short run of people dumping their 116520, but the value will come back up. Most likely, there will always be a strong market for vintage. Value will be based on condition. It will be great for people who want a daytona but don't want to pay retail.

Not sure about the 116520, but I think the Zenith Daytona will hold its value very well.

What do you think?

I completely agree. All Daytonas are fantastic! We now just have another version of a classic, classy watch!!

The fact that anyone is even having this discussion shows that both the Daytona as a watch and Rolex as a brand are very strong.

Rolex moved forward with the model in a manner that added improvements but paid homage to the past. This is why Rolex is such a great company; they've increased equity in both the new model and the brand itself without taking anything away from the previous model.

Phenomenal piece buddy Travis!

Strange but as I await the new C-tona, I have been appreciating these classic bezels so much and been swapping between 16520 and 116520 all week.

Thinking of buying a 116520 or two and tuck them away!

So well said and complete opposite of the Panerai strategy where the new model strategy has been dilutive rather than accretive towards brand value.
