I think 3 to 4 luxury watches are ideal. Diver/tool watch, Aviator, Dress watch, and a Chronograph (speedy for me). I also don't count "inexpensive beater" watches, I'll always have my Seiko orange monster and my Citizen eco-drive. If I HAD to choose just one, GMT Master II.

For me I had a collection of quartz and low end automatic mongrels before I got my first Omega (SMP Bond); next I had to have a Rolex. From there it was a very slippery slope. The though of ridding myself of the collection has a nice ring to it but so far, no.
I agree. I'm not a collector, but I am definitely a hobbyist.

Sell... consolidate....go PM....

It took me quite a while, but I'm with you on the GMT.

VERY hard to ever imagine being a one-watch man since introduction to TRF and WUS. Now theres this innate desire to 'try them all'

I used to just have one watch. However I was flipping it every month sometimes a couple of weeks. That's when I knew one was never going to do it.

Curious if a one watch person identified themself as being a "collector". I thought the question was rather simple.

I own one watch. I would love another; but I fear it will only make things worse. This forum is really good at enabling.

No, I don't see myself as a collector. But I do enjoy reading about watches, trying them in, reading about everyone's collections here.

Even if I do pick up another, I still wouldn't consider myself a collector.

I've been a one-watch guy for years now. I am dangerously close to adding a BLNR, though. I think it's a nice mix, and if rotating isn't in my nature, I'll sell one.

I just went from 8 down to 1, two weeks ago. I rarely wore my others so it just was good economic sense. However....I'm sure it will change.

My history is as a serial monogamist. Lately however, in the last few months I've developed a 4 watch rotation with one on the injured reserve list. I go Rolex, Omega, Brietling, Oris, rinse and repeat. It's not written in stone though. Occasionally I'll break out an old Seiko, Wenger or Ernest Borel. I own about 2 dozen. Most never get worn any more and their resale value is negligible so they just sit there.

I own 1 Rolex OP..and that's it..just got it...I think that's enough for me..
I have a few other old watches from long ago that never get worn..my pops old watches..
My old Seiko Chronometer from the 70's...is in service and due back in Sept..I miss that watch a bit as I've owned it for 40 years now..and love the stopwatch feature..
Probably only 1 more watch for me..a PM Cellini or JLC...maybe..
But.. I could live with the Rolex OP for the rest of my life..and not miss a beat..

100% legitimate question. Yes, you can be a collector with only one watch. If you feel they you are a collector, you are one. Who cares what anyone else thinks!

I personally envy one watch people. I just can't be... You know what they say... More watches, more problems!

For the most part I am a one watch guy. I have others but pretty much wear my Submariner exclusively.

I wear it with suits, tuxes, scrubs, shorts and tshirt, on the beach, just fits in everywhere and with everything.

I've actually sold 3 watches because I just don't see a need for them after my sub purchase.

I don't know how old you are or how far along in life's typical milestones you have reached. But when you're married with kids, in a stable job, own a house, etc, etc...there comes a time when you realize that there are not many things in life that you can easily change. You can't change your wife (assuming one is happily married), it's not like you can change up where you live from the toss of a coin. You're responsible now, got to keep things going... BUT the one enjoyable thing that you can change is your WATCH! And man is it fun. The hunt for the next one, the searching pictures, the research, the purchase, and then finally the rotation and variety. It's so awesome.

What a great post, it sums it all up I think
Great to read all the other responses as well and it is good to know that quite a few people are downsizing for simplicity. I'll keep that in mind before I add yet another one to my small collection.

Oops..I just realized that I now officially qualify as a Rolex collector (>1)

I own 9 or so, three being a blnr, exp ii and citizen (work) I rotate through daily. The rest hold sentimental value. Oh and if I'm wearing a suit I break out the Visodate...
