I don't know how anyone can answer the question for you except you. It depends on the personality of the boss, the type of company, the culture of the company, and on and on.

In fact, I believe you should be watching out for your peers who may be envious of your Rolex because they are the ones who believe they are underpaid than you, except this may not be necessarily true - see above. On a different point, I used to wear a vintage SS Sub which not many paid attention towards ... some even thought it was a fake because of the scratches on the plastic crystal. A consultant said mine is a fake because the second hand was not ticking every second like a quartz When I bought a TT, just about everyone noticed it on the first day despite wearing a long sleeve shirt, and I detect some jealousy from peers, but not my female boss. |

Absolutely not! I think we should be all proud of the watches we wear, whether it's a Rolex or a Casio. Nothing to hide there. Also, when filling out the self-appraisal section of my annual performance review at work, I always write under "Weaknesses'' that "I have a soft spot for nice watches, especially Rolexes''!! So my bosses know what watches I wear, even if they haven't seen them!

My boss drives a Chrysler Sebring with close to 200,000 miles on it and wears a watch with Disney ears on the face. The only thing he spends money on are his kids and grandkids. He's one of those guys that won't spend the $10.00 per month for his own cell phone on a family plan. He and his wife are extremely thrifty and he would never understand a $5,000+ wristwatch.

In answer to the question, heck NO. My boss makes MUCH more then I do anyway. If he wanted a Rolex, he could very easily just drive to the nearest AD and buy any model in the display case. Besides, where I work, most of my bosses/employees have no idea what a Rolex even looks like anyway.
Oh, and I noticed he (the main boss of the company) wears a gold Timex, and the next boss below him wears a Movado. |

My boss wears a 16 year old Datejust that his father received when he retired from IBM, the dad wore it for about a month and gave it to my boss who was a young man in the Air Force at the time. My boss wore it during the Panama Invasion (I wore my Seiko during that) and then wore it during Operation Desert Storm. It's pretty beat up looking but he loves it, and he enjoys looking at mine as well.

NO WAY !!!! I love wearing it in front of him. He chooses to buy 1600 to 2500 dollars suits and 500 dollars shoes.......I buy mine at the mall and wear my money on my arm. He breaks my stones about my suits, however I just smile and know his suit will wear out in a year or two, my Rolex will be around forever. Whos smarter ????

No need to. My boss loves me to dress nice, down to the Rolex. He figures if his assistant looks successful, that makes him look successful. He's probably right.
Besides, he can appreciate a fine watch. He wears an Omega. Jeannie |

Some people on this thread get it and some people just don't. And I don't mind their replies because i understand the meaning of public forums. Let me tell you why I opened this thread. - I am 30 and bought my second Rolex. (did not inherit). Although I know i spend too much on watches (at my age), I do what pleases me. At the same time I like to get opinion from others regarding what is appropriate and what is not in the corporate culture. My boss is AVP, owns a merc and a big house in a posh locality but wears Invicta. He has three kids in college and always cribs about his expenses. I am a Sr PM and have lived up to his expectations (till now). But I think twice before wearing my rolex in meetings with him. That is the reason I opened this post. I am not looking for "What pants should I wear" kind of opinion but a genuine opinion. Hope that helps. Again I appreciate everyones replies on this thread.

Again, no I would not. I worked for it and its down to me how I spend my money and its his problem if he's a cheapskate or lacking in imagination or passion. If he did not like it I would look for another job.

From my "boss" days, I think had I seen that under "weaknesses" I would have thought less of the employee. I prefer weaknesses such as "still working on efficiency in time usage" or "need to get my cold calls up and follow them up better" or " need a better understanding of the macro-economics affecting our field" or something that shows upward mobility, a passion for the work, and a recognition of a direction of effort that will gain greater results. Watches wouldn't have figured into job analysis. |

I came into my current job already owning a Rolex. It did generate some comments (for those who noticed) at first and now... 2 out of 3 of my bosses own them also. There's about 4 of us here who own Rolex but I have rights to being the one who broke the ice.

I am torn. Torn between my own enthusiasm and my very subdued work environment. For example, my co-workers get excited about how old their BBQ grill is compared to my new Weber and my boss was upset that when he paid off his mortgage early the bank charged him a $75.00 fee for the paperwork. Poor Bastard, my heart bleeds. I have been there for since I was 23 (41 now) and in all that time I have wanted a Rolex. My boss and senior co-workers shot the notion to pieces and stated that even if they hit the lottery they would never spend that much $$ on a watch. I love my GMT and wear it everyday but I have not shown off my watch to anyone at the office because I simply don't want to hear the BS. They all live in nice but modest homes and drive their cars into the ground. And yes, I am keeping my eye out for employment opportunities.

Hey, I am a nurse. I never hid mine from the Docs I work with...even though they are not my "bosses". However, one thing I did notice...I was taken more seriously after I noticed that a few of them saw that I was wearing one!
No offense to the Docs out there...this was just in my setting! Sparky |

I wear a 14060M and would not have a problem with wearing it in front of my boss, the wife that is.

Seriously, there have been times when I have made more money that my boss, so I would not flaunt the watch, but also would not hide it.

If your boss wears an Invicta, he probably couldn't care too much about watches and is likely to have little regard for whatever watch you choose to put on your wrist.
On that basis, I would wear what ever watch I wanted and if the topic came up, I would play down the significance of what brand anyone chose to wear on their wrist. For all he knows you could have got it as a graduation present or something. On the other hand, you could just tell him the truth that you are a watch freak and then he would totally understand it isn't about status or appearance, it's just about the watch. Whatever way you go, it's how you handle yourself that matters, not what you have on your wrist.

I just started a new job, and although I wore my Rolex GMT-Master II to the interview, I won't wear it to work. I had to field too many questions at my last job from coworkers who either recognized the watch or heard about it from someone who did. I'm a hard worker and I am good at what I do, and sometimes that alone is enough to generate enemies. I don't need to give these types of negative people any other reason to dislike me, and to gossip about me. Although I only own one Rolex, I own a dozen other decent watches which I used to rotate during the week. After the Rolex was noticed, I had coworkers question the brand of the other watches as well: "Is that another Rolex?" I work in aerospace manufacturing, and encounter people from a diverse spectrum of cultures, educations, and incomes. Most of the people who would think that a Rolex is ostentatious and a waste of money drive expensive SUVs with 23" chrome wheels and live in a rented little house.
I recently bought a Victorinox Swiss Army Summit XLT Titanium to use exclusively at work. It is an affordable quality timepiece that is understated, and although it resembles some more expensive watches, the red Victorinox emblem at 12 O'clock is easily recognized. It's unfortunate that I feel compelled to act this way, and suppress my watch hobby, but I just came from a snake pit where everything one did or said would somehow turn into a subject of gossip, so I now feel as though the less my coworkers know about me, my hobbies, my personal life etc. the better.
