I listen to them at times. I can tell the Hz or VPH by counting how many cliks per second. Fun little exercise.

I've been able to confirm so far:

- 18,000 vph in my Longines pocket watch (2.5 Hz or 5 clicks per second),
- 21,600 in my NH35 based divers (3 Hz or 6 clicks),
- 25,200 vph in my co-axial 2500 ETA based (3.5 Hz or 7 clicks).
- 28,800 vph in my regular ETA based and Rolex watches (4 Hz or 8 clicks).

Love the different sound signatures too. Find it pretty fascinating.

Best necro revival ever.

I love the sound of 3 Hz personally... and that the seconds tracks on my watch are broken into thirds for perfect alignment of the Chrono / seconds hand.

I have always listened to my watches now and then and it's quite a cool thing to hear. But once you've heard it, you've pretty much heard it and don't want to repeatedly do it... that's just me of course!

I'm not an expert horologist but I wonder if watch movements have a signature pattern which a timograph could be used to compare.

I wonder how many of you having read this will be placing your watches against your ear listening to their movements

Like it, nice to hear difference among different brands and models. Have a timegrapher where you can also see vital signs of the watch as well !

I sometimes heard them ticking from across the room. I keep them on a flat counter and for whatever reason the sound seems to resonate between the cabinet & mirror next to them. If it's quiet and everyone else is asleep I can hear them from 6ft away.

Love hearing the sound of the automatic movement...each of my pieces have such a unique sound. The Rolex movement seems to have a deep ticking sound

I love listening to the mechanical ticking of all my automatics. My favorite is my Panerai Pam661 Carbotech with P.9010 movement. Because of the carbotech case acting like a acoustic guitar body, the metallic ticking has a resonating melodic "ping" like sound. I swear just listening to it for 60 seconds lowers my blood pressure. Its also one of many reasons I will never, ever sell this watch.

Funny this thread came up today.

Last night my watch beating woke me up. I wondered what the hell it was and it took me a minute of thinking my tinnitus had elevated to a whole other level before realizing it was my watch.

I used to be able to hear them, but now they sound just like tinnitus. That's what shooting without hearing protection and 2-cycle Detroit Diesel boats will do.

I agree with an earlier post. Rolex movement has a metallic ping sound. Reminds me of a fork tapping on a wine glass or something.... I think a Rolex movement sound is unique and particular. I've listened to other brand's movement sounds and it doesn't sound the same.
I always wondered if you can tell a real Rolex from a super clone fake by just listening to the movement sound.... can a clone movement replicate that genuine Rolex sound as well? I hope not...
Anyways, here are two samples of a Rolex movement sound courtesy of Alexander Pang on youtube.

So jealous!, I haven't heard a watch tick, crickets or birds sing since I was in the military in the 80's. Not even with hearing aids. I used to love hearing a fine movement tick.

I find it interesting that different Rolex movements and different cases maintain the general “Rolex sound” - …tickehtickehtickehdingdinfdingdingpingpingpingtic kticktick….

My current Rlx, the 216570 (42 mm with the unique 3187 mvmt) does not have a noticeable ping in its ticking. Well, if it does, I haven't tried listening in a quiet-enough environment to notice it. In fact, it sounds more subdued as a standard 8 bps ticking sound.

Would be interesting to have a sound library of different movements/models.
I was too curious so I finally took my 216570 Exp II to a quiet area of the house (despite two kids upstairs) and muffled all ambient sound with pillows/blanket (yes, what is wrong with us?). I did finally notice the 'ping' sound that I used to remark (easily) all the time with my former 116000 OP. However, I can attest that it is more difficult to detect in the Exp II. I don't know, chalk it up to case size (thicker?), the movement itself, less clearance for echo within the case; I have to take it to a very quiet area to notice it, though.

I would love to.

But between the voices in my head and tinnitus, I can't hear them.
