Rolex is said to come from hoROLogical EXcellence, although Hans Wilsdorf himself never said what it actually meant.

That the numbers on the ceramic bezel are filled with gold or platinum.

Also, the Milgauss green sapphire crystal was so difficult to make that Rolex didn't bother patenting it saying that other companies wouldn't bother.

I was sitting here looking at mine thinking that this must be related to certain models. I refused to believe there was something wrong with mine as I just got it yesterday.

In 1966 Rolex sold both gilt and matte dials. This was the transitional year from gilt to matte.

You never actually own a Rolex
You merely look after it for the Wilsdorf Foundation.

Pretty much anything that comes out of the mouth of a chain AD salesperson while trying to push a sale.

No, not true. Some are knowledgeable and patient.

To be precise, it was a GMT 16750 on an Oyster Bracelet with the Pepsi Insert.

The watch was donated to the NRA and auctioned; price achieved and winner's name are not known to me.

Holy Magnum ! Sorry to hijack the thread Guys. Gimme a sec.
It's really a great honour and I'm just totally Gob-smacked to finally meet you Sir. I was 8 yrs old when I watched my first Magnum PI series on TV( 0nly some random episodes in a few seasons).I already knew a little about military watches but nobody told me what Tom Selleck was wearing !

Then I read a story you posted about Magnum PI & Tom Selleck on a thread 6 yrs ago and it all came back. You were a Honolulu police officer and played the part of an extra cop on the set ! That's you isnt it ? The blond Cop shuffling papers !
I always believed that the Rolex Pepsi should be renamed Tom Selleck's GMT.....

I did not get one. Didn't get any of that stuff. Just the standard box, id card, spare links, and tag cut off.

They sized it to fit me, and I walked out the door with a Rolex Explorer on my wrist. It was an impulse buy from my girlfriend at the time.

I don't care about those things cause I will probably never flip it.

There is another explanation out there, guessing that it means ROlling EXport.

Reminds me of that scene in No Country for Old Men where Carla Jean asks the Sheriff if that was a true story he told her. He replies, "well it's true that it's a story"

Rolex alloys is own steel, gold and platinum. No other watchmaker does this, or has the capacity.

While Corporal Clive Nutting was a prisoner of war he ordered a replacement Rolex Oyster 3525 and one was delivered to Nutting at the prison camp, Stalag Luft III. The Rolex was then used to time the movements of the Nazi guards and aided in them in escaping the prison camp.

I noticed this a couple weeks ago on my new SubC date. I thought, "what a cool coincidence!". I guess with Rolex there are not many coincidences, just attention to detail.

Compared to another brand; you actually own a Rolex - and you may pass it on to the next generation.
