Submariner vs. Submariner Date.

Joking aside, I have grown to like the look of no-date sub ever since I joined this forum. Before then, I would have never thought about buying a Rolex with no date on it.

I prefer the Date, but only by a hair. I'm not a big fan of the ceramic subs, so between the 14060 and 16610 it's the 16610 due to the beefier bracelet. The "hanging clasp" of the 14060 is such a turn off...... the Cyclops wins by a whisker!

Tried both of them on last year when I was orientating on my first and still only Rolex. Thought I would gonna end up with the dat version, but personally I liked the look of the no date much more when on the wrist. Can't think of any other reason why then symmetry because they are identical except for the cyclops.
Strangely the no dat looked smaller and a bit less flashy to me but I was afraid I would end up missing the date function so eventually ended up wih a Sea Dweller because of the lack of a cyclops on it.

I prefer the date for myself but think the no date looks better. Additionally I know the date is an extra complication and costs more but I think the £750 extra is too much for a date.

Had the luxury of having both in possession now. In fact, this is the third SubC Date I had while THE Submariner is the first. Will decide which is the keeper soon.

Function should dictate design - why do you need to know the date underwater?

You're quite right. But it's still designed as a dive watch and so I think the design should reflect that original intention.

I was at an AD this morning looking at some of their Yach Master II's and saw they had a Sub and Sub date right next to each other. The time on the watch read 2:30 and I noticed at that moment how disruptive the cyclops was to not only the aesthetics of the watch but in trying to tell time. The magnifier really made the hour hand look a little whacky, I thought to myself I'm sure glad I purchased the Sub vice the date version.

My first Rolex was a 14060, many years ago. I eventually bought a 16610, then a 16613 and a 16600. The date is important!

To me the Cyclops is a Sub, part of the icon for me personally. I am generally biased as I'd never wear a watch with no date.

There are two main reasons why people like the sub more than the sub date. Firstly, it's the classic sub look. The first subs didn't come with a date so there's that. Secondly, the sub has a much cleaner dial and is very symmetrical.

There's also the huge price difference between sub and sub date...for just adding the date it may seem like a lot to some. I personally prefer the sub date and feel that it really is the "full package" however I don't look to by watches so that others can easily identify the brand...the cyclops is unimportant to me. Just a cool feature that makes reading the date a bit easier. Despite the higher price, I think the sub date is better value for the money because they tend to retain their value a bit better and to my knowledge are a bigger seller than the sub. Hope this helped.

The no date sub has a cleaner design however I am so used to seeing date subs (mine included) that the no date subs look "naked" or incomplete to my eye. Interesting that the no date version is not extended to TT, YG, WG or Green versions. Am sure I would be just as happy with a no date version.

I love the simplicity of my no date automatics, so when I was shopping for my first Rolex, I knew I wanted a Sub, but went back and forth on the date/no date decision. In the end I got the Subc/date because of the iconic appearance with the cyclops magnifier. That said, if I could add another to the collection my next choice would be the 14060.

Definitely in the date camp. Tried a Black Bay and could never fully get over the no date aspect of the piece. NO date might be cleaner aesthetically speaking, but the date is a must for all of my watches.

The no date is for me more traditional. I also prefer the symmetry of the non- Sub dial. It's simple and beautiful.
