White. It's far more feminine. BTW, you are a great boss!

Very nice gesture. I vote for white. White is considered to be the color of loyalty and perfection.

Why not ask her husband which she'd prefer?

Huh? It's been a long running American tradition that employers purchase clocks or watches for long standing, valuable employees. I'm not buying her edible underwear. I'm buying her a watch. With all due respect, I think it is weird that you think it is weird.

Are you buying all your male employees watches too?

I'm sure if his loyal-for-years paralegal happened to be male he'd do the same.

I don't think it's weird or inappropriate at all. I think it's a lovely gesture.

I polled my husband real quick and he wouldn't be bothered if I was in a similar situation and my boss gifted me a Rolex. In fact, he'd be thrilled, because he would "be off the hook!"

I voted black dial - the white is stunning, but there's something about that black dial that just sings.

I thought it was a little strange too...but I guess people do things a little differently up here. All we get for long term recognition is a cheezy gold pin.

I think the best idea is to take her to the AD and pretend to be shopping for your wife. This way you her her input on all three as well as size preference.

The question should be... what will your wife think?

haha jk I reckon white or black. Blue can be risky.

A good loyal paralegal is a very difficult-to-find and valuable person, especially if working together gets things done fast!

I'd go for black dial, being what I see as the most likely dial option considering what you indicated.

We get two levels:
1. Gift certificates (eg. $50 to Chilis or CPK)
2. Annual bonuses

Never jewelry or watches - I thought that was a thing of the the past. But I guess for a private enterprise anything goes.

See now that's _definitely_ weird!

"How was work today honey?"
"Great! My boss took me to a Rolex dealer, told them I was his wife and bought me this nice Datejust!"

If I were the boss, I'd certainly take the assistant to the AD and let her pick but would skip the "wife" part

It all comes down to how secure the OP is in his marriage and his relationship with the assistant. I have had very nice gifts bestowed upon me from my boss (both of us being male) and no one thought it was amorous expression on his part.

People's insecurities really shine through on these forums.

Wow. This is a tough one. Many different responses. I'd go with the black dial.

I could see it causing an issue down the road though.

Well there are two parties to wonder about:
1. OP's wife
2. Assistant's husband

I'm "secure in my marriage" but I would definitely not want someone claiming my wife was theirs only for the sake of "saving face" at a Rolex dealer. Ball up and say it's your assistant and I'm fine with it.

Wow. My wife read this and looked at me and said “ where’s my Rolex”.
I said you don’t need one. There is a clock on the oven. Some women.

There appears to be a miscommunication.

The idea is not to mislead the AD, but to better surprise the assistant by having her think it wasn't for her when, in fact, it is for her.

Thank you for your clarification.

That is sexist IMO. bonuses in any industry are typically based on performance, not perceived need

I really like what you are wanting to do, but in today’s world be careful. Frankly gifts/bonus such as this, especially from a male boss to a female subordinate could be taken in a very negative way. So be careful. And more importantly, make sure her husband knows in advance. Nothing would be worse than one upping the the hubs! Just make sure all of your ducks are in a row. Otherwise, great idea and black dial.

you all are making this way too complicated. He's doing something nice that 100% of us would love if someone were to point this gesture towards us. I'd prefer the black dial, but you cant go wrong Black or White. its always good to see when hard work is recognized- love the thought of this
