You’re out with your wife and you “just wanted to talk watches” with a 20 something cashier at a local burger joint? Really?

And then you want to tell people about this encounter?

It was a casual late lunch. It wasn’t our anniversary date night. The whole interaction was a total of 5 minutes if that. I was waiting while he poured my beer.

the other day, i was at subway , and it was attended by a Chinese fellow, he was wearing a blnr gmt..seems real, but then i thought, he is either the owner of the store to wear a watch like that or i don't know? like said above if you make minimum wage..it s hard to buy a real Rolex like that. Anyway, i think the watch was real judging by the quality and details of the bracelet.
on the other end, the other day i was sitting next to a person i know from work, and noticed he was wearing a Sub, from far away, the bracelet looked like it was fake or rather from a vintage sub, a little bit up, so because i was curious, i asked" hi, oh is that a Sub you are wearing?"
he said oh yeah i am wearing a Rolex...hum not a great start...i actually said oh nice, can i look at it...to see if it was a vintage model..quickly realized it was a knock off.
the edging of the crown was not even centered on the crystal...he asked me, what do you think? i said think of what?
he said do you think it s real?
i did not have the guts to tell him , it looked like a semi cheap copy.
so i just told him, i did not know , as i was not an expert.
he then told me he paid $80 for it in Shanghai , he said he s had it for 3 years and it was great...was spend thousands when you can buy an 80 dollars watch , even you had to replace it every 3 yrs you would still be ahead... i am thinking why wear a fake Rolex if it s fake? i don't get it...on top of that he did not even know the price of such a watch...he thought $ 3000...i wish. i just thought it was cheesy, especially with the job he does, he can afford a real one.

Is it a regional issue?

I’ve found Texans to be really open to friendly conversation with strangers.

I can’t see that happening here in Los Angeles. Conversation is kept strictly business - and short at that. Just take my order accurately and politely and there won’t be a problem.

the thing with a fake Rolex, is you either play ignorant, and try to show off.
but then really if you know it s fake and pretend it s not and try to show off, you are just lying...why lie about a watch??? really you are not impressing anyone.
i just don't get it.

They did not, I ended up stopping at the drug store just down the street.

I’d say so. I live in a 2K population small Texas farming town. Sometimes you’ll see an old timer with a gold DJ wearing a pearl snap shirt and worn Wrangler jeans tucked into cowboy boots. Don’t let that fool you. He’s driving a 70K pick up truck that he probably paid in cash. Around here you can live like a King on a 6 figure salary. If your wife makes the same, you’re doing just fine. ;)

I don't think locale has too much to do with it. I'm just suggesting that you don't back a stranger into a corner (in the figurative sense) and prompt them to answer questions that they don't know the answers to. Always allow a polite exit to your questioning.

A guy came into my office to pitch me on an investment. When I looked down at his wrist, there was a 42mm sub with polished center links.

I told him that if he wanted to be taken seriously, every part of his appearance had to fit the part.

Hopefully he got the lesson.

Just maybe he didn't feel comfortable having you looking at, and quizzing him about his watch.

Yes it is!! I think when someone calls attention the someone's "fake" Rolex they merely want to call attention to theirs.
