It all depends on the location and setting. I typically mind my own business.

None of those options.
I live in London, people are not that friendly, you can't talk to strangers about their watches, they would think you might want to rob them.

I have been a 'spotter' for years now, but have never ever commented, nor, I might add, has anyone ever commented on mine, and I have sported a Rolex on my left wrist for the best part of 37 years. Time flies.

my awareness is pretty good and its usually we notice each others watch. sometimes they may say something, not me usually. this happens daily around here. todays rolex spotting was while getting breakfast, saw him notice my d-blue, checked his wrist and he was wearing a white dialed milgauss.

It might've been a Sub, DD, whatever, but you get the gist.
This was my last experience attempting a conversation, but a GMT instead. Was rather awkward to say the least.

I had a valet one time comment on my Hulk, then I noticed he was wearing a Seiko Monster, we ended up having a brief conversation about watches and cars.

I voted "Both of you see each other's watches, but pretend that you don't." but also "Try to gain a better view of the other Rolex wearer's watch: model, year, and other details." would do.

Never, ever, start a conversation or pull up the sleeve.

That is my wife right there, I was wearing a PO8500 on a flight back from FL and the dude across the aisle was wearing a gmt master II. He said man that is nice watch which I said you too (but felt odd since I was caught by surprise) I have one of those at home. My wife got really excited saying something like “see, someone said something about your trinket”

Being new to the world of Rolex, I don't know enough about the reference numbers or the technical nuances to have an intelligent conversation but saying" Hey nice watch" is a good icebreaker for a short conversation.

I’m not a very outgoing person to start with so I rarely comment but the few times I have it hasn’t gone the way I would like. Most people simply don’t care about watches.

I think a common assumption is that if someone is spending thousands on a watch they must be a WIS but it isn’t the case at all. Especially with Rolex. Tons of people just want the name on their wrist.

I've talked with people who have apparent Rolex watches. One in particular comes to mind who has a Sub Date (maybe) and claims he bought it while he was in the service in 'Nam in the '60s. I knew by the white gold plots on the hour markers it was BS. I had to hold my tongue while he was sitting there. Some BS can really flow regarding watches.

I'll try to identify the specific ref of that piece first--- if it's a very uninspiring piece, I'll just move on; if it's something interesting, I'll stare at it a little bit

I have had some mixed reactions over the years.

Valentine's day I noticed the guy opposite us was wearing a Coke Bezel GMT. Nice fade on the bezel, but what threw me was the fact that it appeared to have PCLs. I was curious as hell, so when his wife left for a smoke break I quickly popped over and complimented him on his watch. He had no idea what I was talking about. His wife saw me leaving their table and obviously asked what it was about. She then came over to us saying she bought him the watch and then showed us what she was wearing. So at least they have one WIS in the family

Some people like to chat watches, some just wanted a Rolex and some almost seem embarrassed when you notice what they are wearing.

I have seen some guys check out my wrist, fortunately not in a gym sauna as someone mentioned
