While I would buy this watch to wear as my daily I think I would be irresponsible not to at least try to get my head around what having a warranty card that reflects the blue dial will do from a collectibility standpoint. This will be a roughly 4-6 month production run so I would hate to save a few grand on the front end and watch the blue dial shoot up in value. That said, I realize trying to speculate collecting trends is a fools errand.

Great point but I guess I wonder where would the collectability really be if a person with a black dial BLRO can have it changed to blue free of charge by Rolex?

I trust Alpino on this one. Too much of a track record on these matters.

RRP seems to be the way the market is heading due to the unavailability of SS. There may not be an easy alternative if buying from an AD.

Back in May I received this note from one of the local ADs.

"Hello Lee,

Here is an update after the visit from our Rolex representative.

Rolex instructions for ALL of the new Oyster Professional series pieces is that we are to currently treat them as the steel Daytona. In other words no orders(payments) are currently allowed. We are to wait to receive our respective stores allotment whenever they may come. Once the pieces arrive it is up to store internal personnel to decide who to sell to. I can say that you are on the top of my list for the model you are interested in. I will reach out when I have one to sell you.

Best regards,
XXXX"

Hopefully we are all blessed to live long enough to find out the bottom line.

As I said earlier, in my case, I received the information from a CEO and a VP, both of whom had just met at a resort for a company leadership conference and with a Rolex executive, who confirmed it for them.
That had nothing to do with the litany of posts of people from various parts of the world that have also heard the same thing locally.

Read the last sentence of the original post. If that doesn’t sound nonsensical, then by all means go for it

That’s where my warranty card conundrum comes into play. Just like you can change the dial of a DJ or DD as long as it was offered for that reference it doesn’t change the warranty card and what is in Rolex system as far as what is factory.

I agree that his track record is great

That doesn't mean it hasn't been discontinued. The head of Rolex Canada told a forum member at an event it has been discontinued. This isn't a guy at an AD going blah blah blah, its the number 1 Employee of Rolex Canada. That in conjunction with a person I know, who is also not some guy at an AD, who heard it from someone very high up at RUSA is enough for me. Two separate high level Rolex employees confirming to two separate forum members around the same time The person who told me also told me about the SD4K and the black dial wg BLRO being discontinued months before they were removed from the website. Same source each time. Each time they have been correct and thus far have yet to provide me with incorrect info going back many years. Time will tell.

Who knows in terms of collectability. We will probably be pushing daisys before significant value is realized If it helps any, Newman Daytonas are selling for 300K with no papers or boxes

I wouldn't worry about collectibility as much as what you would enjoy having. If some people don't buy it because of collectibility, some will because they desire a blue dial. I don't think having warranty papers stating a blue dial would add an extra 5k. I see older GMTs that have added, switched or Undocumented Pepsi bezels and they still seem more desired than the black or coke bezel.

Yea good point. This all gives me something to think about. Ultimately I will be making this decision taking the collectibility aspect out of it. Thanks everyone on the useful insights!

FWIW, the guys at Watchbox have also said in a couple of different videos that they were informed the blue dial has been discontinued after a very short run.

Would never pay MSRP for a PM model. Way I see it, one should only pay MSRP if that's the going price everywhere. I imagine you can still find AD's willing to discount 15-20+% on PM models if you keep looking. With a financial commitment this large I think one owes it to themselves to research extensively.

I have the WG BLRO with black dial and 100% categorically Rolex are NOT doing any dial changes from Black to Blue period. My watch was sent back from the RSC with their apologies that they would no longer be able to make the dial change.

Really, you can buy a platinum Daytona for 20% of MSRP all day long.

This thread was very informative. Never knew that Rolex did the dial swaps. I think if you really want that watch then go for it despite it is at the msrp
