I went with a Sub myself recently, but if Rolex ever releases the YM in steel with ceramic bezel, I may have to rethink my choice. YM case shape wears much nicer on the wrist IMO. The aesthetics of the Pt bezel just do nothing for me.

I’ve never understood the point of the YM. Submariner, all day long for me.

Off topic but I like to see the wear on that Hulk clasp - shows a watch that is well-loved and well-worn

Is this your first Rolex? If so the Sub is a safe bet. You won't ever dislike it and likely won't wish you had purchased the YM over it. That said the YM is the road less traveled, especially as a first Rolex, but the risk of regret over not purchasing the Sub is there.

I am a YM fan and think both the blue dial and the rhodium are beautiful. I'd encourage you towards the YM, but already having two Rolex my perspective on what's next for my collection may be different than yours. Good luck, no wrong choice.

I’d pick a YM over any SS SubC. Every time. The only reason I flipped my YM was because I shifted to full PM models, but I still have my RG OF YM and wear it almost daily since I sourced an Easylink!

Hope this can help you decide.

Both are amazing watches and this is one of the rare occasions where you WIN on either choice.

I love my YachtMaster just as much as the Sub. It's abit more blingy but subtle at the same time due to it being TT rose gold matt black dial.

The Sub is just pure classy in my opinion.

I'll give two reasons for buying the YM, in order of importance.

#1 you prefer its looks over the Sub's.

#2 you buy it grey BNIB and save yourself a significant sum of money. You could still probably find one for the price of a steel Sub, even less if you're lucky.

If you prefer the YM but hesitate due to the iconic status of the Sub, here's my take. The YM is the elegant version of the Sub for the discerning connoisseur: stylish case, polished, comfortable, luxurious (platinum elements).

The Sub is a great piece, no question, it's just that it's the obvious go to choice, the one everyone wants and ends up owning.

There are two ways of looking at this. On the one hand, you tell yourself "if everyone wants a Sub, there's got to be a good reason for it", and you'd be right. On the other hand, you could think "do I want the same watch as everyone else, follow the crowd and be content and satisfied with my choice?", and you'd also be right.

Is there any logical reason to buy from an AD versus a trusted seller that has BNIB product with the box and papers and warranty card for less than MSRP ? I would also save 9% tax by buying non-AD and also wont have to wait a year Seems like a no brainer unless I am missing something.

If a trusted seller has a BNIB and it's a better deal than an AD and you save 9% sales tax on top of that, there is no reason not to buy from a Trusted Seller. As you said, IMO, that's a no brainer. The key word is "Trusted" seller though. You can't be too careful but there are definitely some guys who sell here where there should be no hesitation to buy from and the "Who's Who" section will tell you who they are.

The only reason to go AD, IMO, is if you are trying to build a collection and will want to be able to lay your hands on hard-to-get pieces in the future without paying the Grey market premiums, in which case you need an AD relationship. But, for the really hot items (think BLRO, various Daytonas, etc...) it seems like you are looking at multiple AD transactions of a significant nature in order to get anywhere near the top of a list.

you are missing the long game. Short term discount shopping does nothing later when you want a hot watch. Way too much instant gratification and expecting instant AD history. It takes years.

Some people play chess when the rest play checkers.

4 years ago if someone got a YM, a DJ, a sub, whatever and continued AD shopping this entire time you would then not have to pay 50+k for a 5711 or 20+k for a Daytona.
Obviously it depends on your long term collection plans, so its for sure something you should consider in advance.

Not all AD's are created equal, so choose wisely

A gorgeous watch for sure. A person cross shopping these two likely wants a little flair. So I like the Submariner more but to compete more equally I'd go for the 116613LB aka the Bluesy.

And...in reply to your actual question...contrary to the popular opinion here, I would go YM. I don't like the Platinum dialed versions as I find them too hard to read since they are so monochromatic. But the Blue 116622 or the Rhodium dial versions are nothing short of stunning in my opinion.

Certainly nothing against the Sub or those that own them and wear them. It's an iconic piece. There is a reason they are so popular. But the fact that they ARE so popular is the very thing that steers me to the YM. I don't want the Rolex watch that everybody else has. I want the one that they don't have. But that's just me. You certainly can't go wrong with a Sub.

The platinum dial gives it a nice weight and it’s slimmer then the sub too. Hope that helps you out.

X2! The Yachtmaster is also up in price over the last year between six and eight hundred dollars amongst trusted sellers here on TRF. Buy it grey as you can still get it below msrp.

I agree, like for the SS BLRO I don’t see my self buying from an AD. I’m not going to over spend thousands of dollars on Jewlery and watches I don’t like just to get the BLRO. If prices go down around $10k in grey I will then get one. Or I might be that lucky to get the call from an AD which is unlikely. Reality is, I don’t think I will be getting one at least in the next 3 years and I’m fine with it

I have a SubC - 116610LV and the Yachtmaster 116655 Everose on Oyterflex. Both are great - my examples are vastly different given that one is the green dial SS Sub and the other the PM YM.

However, that said, buy what you like best. They have the same movement. One is not better than the other. If it were me, I would buy the SS YM blue dial over a black SubC. That blue sunburst dial is amazing and it's such a cool piece. And my opinion proves the point - buy the one that you can't live without. Buy the one that jumps out at you and says "Buy Me!"

I have a gold blue face sub non ceramic and a new gold yachtmaster 2 and the YM is way nicer...not even comparable in person. The 40 to 44 mm is so much better for me let alone the actual thickness of the watch itself in comparison to the sub. Sure the sub is nice but the YM is just pure money looking and way heavier. Feels and look so much more substantial and valuable across the board.

The YM has been upgraded to the new movement v the sub. That should clinch the deal.

I do much prefer the YM. Sure. Subs a nice watch.

But the case on the YM fits so much better. It’s a far sexier watch. And not everyone has one.

I saw some post earlier about the fact that it only goes 100m vs the sub. Okay, if you are the .001% that might actually need that.

The YM is just a nicer watch.

Are some turned off by the name? I once was. But it’s just a name and means nothing. Rarely does one dive with a sub, or race with a Daytona. This is just a great watch with a goofy name. But if I could only have one, it’s likeky going to be a YM.
