There are more nicely finished watch brands out there, for sure. Rolex hits a sweet spot for me with quality, durability, utility, variety, and retained value. For that reason, Rolex is the best watch brand for me.

Depends in how you define "best"

Like others have said, depends on what is meant by "best." Operational definitions and criteria need to be set, defined, and measured.

Yes, for the average WIS. They make great dive watches, great dress watches, and great GMTs for a "reasonable price". I think those who will spend more for a PP or ALS, as 2 examples, are a small percentage of luxury watch owners.

+1 You can't deny the complications/craftsmanship of PP and all they've contributed to horology over the years. It's just a realm Rolex does not inhabit.

Exactly... !!!!

To hit on other points others have made...

Finishing and craftsmanship on movement...
Ummm, I'm not going to stare and look at how the movement
functions all day long.. It really doesn't matter as long as the
time is spot on...

Overall Finishing... Welp, most Rolex are overpolished because
people can't stand superficial scuffs let alone a scratch or a nick
so how are others going to compare when dinged , dented and
scuffed/scratched??? Exactly, doesn't matter...All Hype...

The Dial... Rolex makes some of the most beautiful dials and
complications if they really wanted to.

Complications... I think Rolex chooses not to make extremely
complicated complications because it's not profitable...
Simple as that...They've made some in the past and proved their
point...

It’s probably the most solid and best value for money but of course PP are finer.

PP are top for me, AP and Rolex are equal second, with Lange just behind.

Now do that with Audemars, Vacheron, Patek. These dont have close to the same recognition. Are they better? Def not to me
Certainly the most well known brand, indeed I have Rolex above even Ferrari and Porsche overall pound for pound for brand equity with men, but the Patek name and indeed AP name is far more prevalent in this SM age that puts a premium on chasing luxury and showing off. PP surprisingly are being name dropped now in 1 in 10 rap/hip hop songs so their name recognition is rising exponentially. VC and Lange have none of this, RM was dropped by Beyoncé and Jay Z in their latest song so that brand will get some traction next.

Here is what Rolex does best in the watch market:

Brand recognition
Long term reliability
Value retention.

This is a Rolex forum so majority is going to say yes. But lets be honest in terms of horology obviously its not.

In my opinion

They’re number 1 in brand recognition

Number 1 on iconic-ness (if you say “a watch”, the general populace has a high chance of visualizing one of Rolex’s models)

Upper echelon in value retention

Upper echelon in durability (especially for a “fine” watch)

Pretty middle of the road in every other way, except probably lowest value for money in terms of pure “watchmaking chops” whatever that means, you know what I mean though.

I voted no only because it's such a subjective question. Your answer, and the reasons for that answer, may not apply to me at all. I love my Rolex. But I also love a completely different watch, my Omega Speedmaster.

Also, a person's taste may change over time. Mine did. I went from preferring a large wrist presence in my watches to preferring something more subtle.

Orange 45.5mm Seamaster > 40mm Rolex GMT Master II BLRO.

Rolex is the best known watch brand making it one of the most recognisable status symbol. Robust reliable movements, yes. Best watch, not necessarily. But agree it sits at a sweet spot for many.

Yes, Rolex is the best wristwatch in the world for me! I've loved the brand ever since I was a kid. Rolex still excites me today as much as it did back then. I'll be a dedicated fan for life. :)

Best brand - yes, absolutely. Their product placement and advertising is fantastic and creates a demand.

Best watches - depends what you want. Personally I find the newer designs a little sterile but there’s no doubt that as a tool they do the job.

Is Rolex the best wristwatch in the world?

Depends on how you qualify ‘best’.....

I think Rolex is one of the best watches out there - but the best overall? That would be tough to choose out of all of the watches out there....
